Fifty Plus (50+) - beverly banned from alabama

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

It's Alabama! Alabamans haven't figured out what a bike is ---

Lack of helmet? My guess is that Alabama does not have a mandatory helmet law. Perhaps there is an old law against trick riding.

My former employer was headquartered in Auburn, AL. It was always a treat to drive through the Bible belt. The landscape is totally cluttered with Jesus billboards, generally in close proximity to "Gentlemen's Clubs" billboards. "Nude" nymphs banned? Hypocrisy taken to Olympian heights!
Cheers,

"Gladiator" is the punchline to an off-color joke. I think that's why it got banned.

Kind of like environmentalists flying around the world in gas-guzzling jets?
You're actually assuming that the very same people who put up the Jesus billbords are the ones putting up the Gentlemen's billboards. Isn't that a bit of a stretch on your part? Do you know the individuals involved? Or are you playing on very worn-out stereotypes? You would typecast, say, a Muslim like that, would you?
Hats off to Alabama. I'm guessing they banned it because the wine is lousy. ;) I bought some of the Pinot and Merlot last week. Not good.
Alabama, a state noted for its poorly educated citizens, poverty, obesity and racism, is also smack in the middle of the "Bible Belt". As such, the alcohol control board there is controlled by Christian Taliban (similar to the "morality police" prevalent in parts of the Muslim world).
The label in question is from a French bicycle advertising poster from the 1890's, and original lithographs sell for around $50,000.
The ACB's absurd decision demonstrates yet again that Alabama is at least 100 years behind the times.

No, it is probably very true. There are very few purveyors of billboards, they rent them to whoever coughs uip the $$$. The signage is generally applied by contractors. Are you stretching a bit here to create an argument?
Do you know the individuals involved?
Not really possible. It is highly unlikely that the billboards are owned individuals. Most likely corporations, they are legal entities. A little hard to get to know.
Or are you playing on very worn-out stereotypes? You would typecast, say, a Muslim like that, would you?
A sadly weak straw man. What do the billboards have to do with Muslims? Or perhaps you meant muslin, the fabric of which large, inexpensive signs were made?
Of course , as in all such matters, YMMV.

I read that it's banned because of nudity, but I don't know if that means the woman or the bike...no fenders, no chain guard, not even a luggage rack or basket; just a naked bike.

Sorry, Wal-Mart would be Arkansas... not Alabama, and we're damn glad they're here. But that's another story.
The issue with the label is clearly the woman's butt crack. What should the folks in Alabama tell their underage children as they wander around in package stores? Should they admit that women have butt cracks? I don't think so! That's a detail that Alabama children just don't need to know until... well, never I guess. Thank goodness the ABC is there to protect the good Christians in 'Bama.
Now, to be fair. Can't we all find at least one embarrassing story about our home state? People are people the world over, and there's no shortage of sanctimonious idiots out there. I've met dumb rednecks in every state I've visited.

I understand Wal-Mart is in Bentonville. I was commenting on the tendency of the left-wing to bash anything connected to the American South.

This attempt at obfuscation was not successful; however, it does deserve credit for creativity and imagination, as it rivals that which might be uttered by or written by a member of the Congress of the United States, a used car salesman, or a network anchor.

With respect to the OP, it is immediately obvious even to the most casual observer that the ban is related to safety. The bike has no dork disk, no chain guard, nor any reflectors of any sort. This bike is unsafe and should not be held up as an example to the public nor endorsed in any fashion.
On a different level, points may have been deducted because the kit, amazing as it is, does not match the bike. This, in addition to the obvious lack of safety, could have influenced the regulators who authored the ruling.

BikeSnob would have noticed the problem with the picture immediately. The bike has no brakes. This is illegal even in New York. I don't see why you'd dump on Alabamians for that.

You mean it's like people writing the tax code not paying the taxes they are obliged to? Or advocating higher taxes for the general population but using every tax dodge available?
Now that you put it that way, I think I understand what you mean.

That's exactly the way I mean it. And, don't forget subsidizing corporations that hide their money offshore...or preaching their religion and then being intolerant of other's.... or espousing marital fidelity and having the highest divorce rates.....and the list goes on and on and on.
Here's what I always tell my friends when they visit: "Welcome to Alabama! Now set your watches back 20 years!"

Ya'll are missing the real point here...............This all started when then Attorney General Ashcroft (a Bush appointee) ordered the statute of “Lady Justice” draped in Velvet Robes because, as he stated at the time, it was “pornographic”.......So you see, it is not a southern ideal at work here, but more of a right wing Republican conspiracy...After all, Alabama is a red state...........
On top of that, when you add the fact that this is a California wine, our fine right-wing (insert Nazi here) law makers automatically think it is some sort of left wing communist and/or socialist (In Alabama they are both the same) trick to corrupt the citizens of Alabama into supporting National Health Care.:thumb:

The skinny about the "Boob under the Boob" is posted here: http://www.snopes.com/politics/soapbox/valentine.asp
It suggests to me that the above post is total bullshirt.
But I don't care much one way or the other. As long as people don't do it in the streets and scare the horses I'm cool either way.
Anyway, This Thread Needs To Die A Quiet Death, and soon.

Dude, you need to lighten up..............My post was a tongue and cheek remark about the Alabama ABC Board's alleged ruling on a wine bottle label...and a minor attempt at humor related to MY legislative representatives in Montgomery........................... Hell I live in Alabama so I'm the one who should be offended by this Thread........and I think it's funny as h*#* ........ I have already asked a friend in SF to ship me a few bottles to give as gifts next Christmas:D
Hmmmmm maybe your just a Ashcroft defender.... if thats the case I can cite all kinds of fun facts about and statements made by Mr. Ashcroft.... some true, some not.... but all Funny................ :roflmao2:

OK, I had their Merlot the other day. It was bad. In order to add some substance to this thread, and avoid a potential mass poisoning in Alabama, I just opened a bottle of the Pinot, as shown on the label posted here. The stuff is total crap! It is sour with a metallic finish. Maybe I will try it as a degreaser - on my winter bike.
Again, hat's off the the fine people of the ABC Board. Knowingly or not, their actions are protecting the populace of the Heart of Dixie. :thumb:
BTW, great article on the Cahaba River in Alabama in this month's Smithsonian Magazine. It's called one one of the most biologically diverse places in the nation.

You want the mods to shut down this thread?? Perfect. Just perfect. Everything (other than the wine in question :twitchy:) has been well balanced and quite polite for an internet forum.
One further tasting note: this stuff doesn't taste any better by allowing it to breathe. What state was it made in again?

Unfortunately, here in Alabammy, sommeliers are only allowed to compare the wine against Granny's Sweet Tea! Now really, you wanna piss off Granny?
