Hello,
My question relates to MTB and road bikes, but Im asking here because I think "issues" are more relevant for speedplay and mud/sand. I have spd no-name pedals on my mountain bike and they are OK. I've gotten them clogged a few times and I am looking to move on to something a step better. Meanwhile, on my road bike, I have look keo pedals. I have diadora jalapeno shoes for my MTB and specialized road shoes.
My issue with look isnt how they operate, it is the fact that they only click in on one side, and when I try to pedal with them unclipped (e.g. when I need to get out of the wy or move someplace close and quick), they slip - very unsafe given that most everywhere I ride on the road has traffic, lights, cars from every direction, etc.
I don't really have an issue with the SPD, but if I bike far enough (say >40 miles) my left knee shows some pain. THis tells me that a bit more float than SPD is required, though it isnt a huge issue to me.
Anyway, my issue/question is if speedplay pedals can be used to pedal a bike without being clipped in. Given the architecture, it seems that it may be hard, but I cannot tell. While Ive read that many say that it is best to stay clipped in nomatter what, I just do not have that comfort level.
Additionally, I like to sometimes be able to go down the road in a pair of flip flops or sneakers.
So, questions are really - can one pedal the speedplay frogs or road pedals without being fully clipped in, and second, can speedplay frogs or others be pedaled in flip-flops or other shoes?
THanks!
P.S. Im also looking at time atacs for my MTB, as well as some others, but Id really like to talk about speedplay here, as I have a high curiosity in them due to servicability and float. Thanks again.
