Where on the Cape?
We stay in Falmouth in September and do several rides and don't think there are any significant climbs.
Near Wellfleet if I remember there were more.

Careful what you tell your daughters.
Two problems with Mt Washington.
* It's pretty unlikely you'll succeed to "do" it.
* It's pretty unlikely you'll get to even try it.
For the second point: The "auto road" up Mt Wash is not a public road, and it's normally closed to bicycling.

I'm not sure how much climbing you will get in that area of MA.
I am not that interested in riding hills, but you may want to check out Mt. Greylock, the highest point in MA. I found this site that gives some guidance on cycling it..

When I drove it, I did notice a lot of frost heave on the road, which would probably require you to take it easy on the descent.

They do, but I've heard the entry fee is expensive and the number of participants limited. You might get lucky and be one of the few, but it's not the way to bet with your daughters.
Anyway the difficulty of getting into the race might be a good thing: Since Mt Washington is often thought to be one of the toughest (mostly-paved) long road climbs in North America (or the whole world?). I think there's lots of athletic riders who've been riding lots of years who can't make it to the top without stopping to rest or walk multiple times.
Now you've got a convenient excuse.

I have family out in Cape Cod. I'm from Vermont; comparitively it's pretty flat I don't know how you think you can prepare for Mt. Washington out there.

If a century ride doesn't have the wow factor you want consider doing a tour.
The Cape Cod Rail Trail ain't gonna prep you for an assault on Mt. Washington. It's not a realistic goal for a new cyclist.
Why don't you aim for something like next year's Pan-Mass Challenge? There's some wow factor there and it wraps up in Provincetown.
