Great Lakes - Check out this ride.... Michigan Mountain Mayhem

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Our club is putting this ride on next spring.

The Michigan Mountain Mayhem (www.michiganmountainmayhem.com) is a (Road Bike) cycling event which will test you both mentally and physically. It is one of the most grueling and challenging rides you will ever participate in.
There are 4 routes to choose from: a 50K teaser, a 100K metric century, a 160K, (100 mile century), and for those who dare a 200K double metric!
Can you handle 10,000 feet of climbing?

From what I can tell, this is the inaugural ride. Yes? Some midwest friends and I have done the Horribly Hilly Hundreds for the last few years but it's getting harder every year to get in what with it also being capped at 1000 riders. And its lottery is no good since only some might get in. There is currently no way to register collectively via the lottery so that it'd be all or none getting in.

This looks like a great ride and it fits in my calendar. I can't commit yet but I'll definitely think about it.
Yes this is the first year for the Michigan Mountain Mayhem.
I have rode both the HHH and the MMM and the routes are very similar. The main difference is the roads in Michigan are better with less traffic.

The graph really doesn't tell you much without the elevation axis labeled. I actually live in Antrim County, so I'm pretty familiar with the terrain. I'm guessing that elevations are going to range from about 620 ft. to around 1000 ft. above sea level. This is glacial moraine country, with numerous ascents of around 300 ft.

Looks nice. Nothing like Ride the Bear, but yes, I'm interested. Got a date? Got an external link so I can send it to my team members?
Thanks

You should be able to click on the bold red letters at the end of Fred's OP. I'm not too familiar with the area around Boyne City, but am very familiar with the western portions of the 160K and 200K routes. I usually bike the parts between Bellaire and Central Lake several time a week, even in winter (w/ studded tires). The view from the highest part of Kiessel Rd. is one of the most spectacular in Northern Michigan.
If anyone is interested in mountain biking in this part of the state, here is an example of a route (http://ridewithgps.com/routes/30977) that makes good use of some of our seasonal roads.

I hadn't realized before that Michigan has mountains... This ride sounds interesting, I'll have to see what sort of condition I'm in closer to the event.

You and your friends should volunteer for the HHH this year. Volunteers are guaranteed a spot in the next year's ride. I volunteered in 2008 and had a good time, but was out of town last year so didn't get to take advantage of the spot.
I am considering it. Maybe if I train for two years I'll be able to finish the 200k. :twitchy:
(shh...my knees are listening)
Here is the graph of the MMM century with the elevation. I do not have the full 130 mile route as I did not want to ride that route just to get the graph. I merged the 100 and the 30 to get the 130 for the website.
I have also compared the HHH first 100 miles and also the HHH last hundred miles for comparisons. All three charts have a 1000 ft range and the data was taken from the same bike and computer. I compared the MMM to the HHH because I have done both and many of you on this forum can relate to the HHH. I feel that both rides are very similar with lots of leg burning pain :). The HHH does end with the mounds road climb (ouch) but the roads and traffic are much better in Northern Michigan

Looks like a blast! If I weren't already signed up for the Trek 100, I'd be in for sure. Count me in for 2011.
The ride is filling up so if you want in don't wait.
A couple of video teasers from the route

After riding across the country the MMM should be a cakewalk.
Only two weeks left! The deadline for a jersey order is April 15th if you want it for the day of the event.

I came across the website for this event a few months back and was hoping to maybe do the 50 or 100k.
The things thats been keeping me from registering so far is that I ride a hardtail mountain bike. I was considering putting narrow slick or semi slicks on it for the event but would I be the only one on a mountain bike?
I do plan on getting a road bike at some point in the future but was hoping to get a taste of what these kind of events are like.
If anyone can give me their opinion Id appreciate it.
You will not be the only mountain bike, however you will definitely be in the minority. I would definitely get the road tires and the gears will help with some of the climbs. The route has many outs for people who bite off more than they can chew so you could start the 100k and after the first SAG stop you could change and do a 40 mile route instead of the 68 mile.
Feel free to PM me or drop an email if you have more questions.
Less than six weeks left!
How many BF'ers are coming?

Are we signing up for a particular distance? From the website it looked like you just let them know how dumb er strong you feel at registration Friday night.

When I registered online it asked which distance you were going.
You do sign up for a distance but can change it on the route.
Registration is going crazy and it looks like we will sell out. See you all there.

Just got home a little bit ago from the ride. Had a great time and it was definitely challenging. Would be looking forward to doing it again next year.

Nice job putting together the ride "Fred". It was very well organized for the first year and fun despite the morning weather. The route was really good too, lots of nice roads and I can say I've climbing a 14% gravel road on my road bike :) I can't believe how hilly it is up there, theres just no flat riding.
Here's my ride stats from today
Duration: 6:56:08 (7:32:16)
Work: 4737 kJ
TSS: 391.1 (intensity factor 0.752)
Norm Power: 214
VI: 1.13
Pw:HR: 5.29%
Pa:HR: -1.05%
Distance: 126.63 mi
Elevation Gain: 10422 ft
Elevation Loss: 10380 ft
Grade: 0.0 % (42 ft)
Min Max Avg
Power: 0 619 190 watts
Heart Rate: 81 184 146 bpm
Cadence: 19 234 86 rpm

Pace 1:26 0:00 3:17 min/mi
Altitude: 515 1065 745 ft
Crank Torque: 0 665 189 lb-in
Those are some very respectable stats.
I have not received the final data from the timing guy but 18.3 MPH will defiantly put you very close to the top.
^ Agreed, or the course was too flat :p

Wow! What a ride. I'll honestly say that was the single most difficult ride I've done. So far. The route was well laid out, the people volunteering were great and I didn't see any problems.
The gravel road was a surprise! That patchwork road, I forget the name, that looked like winter camo was a treat. I'm pretty sure Boyne City must have been where my Grandad grew up because I've never seen a place that was constantly up but returned to the same elevation.
You could walk six miles uphill in the snow to and from school!
Though the occasional decent was nice, it would have been better if they didn't end at a tee or a controlled intersection or a turn so we could carry some speed.
I'm still chipping sand out of my chain and derailleur from the wash outs and high humidity and my bike isn't talking to me anymore.
All in all thanks for a great weekend! The event was great, Red Mesa's food was excellent and the people were fantastic.

The only bad thing about the ride is that it makes me want to go out and get a road bike and start doing more hill climbs and possibly some century road races. :P
(I rode it on a hardtail btw)
Yah those washouts were wicked. It is amazing what 4 inches of rain in a couple of hours can do to roads with 10% TO 20% grades.
