Utility Cycling - Front Basket

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'm having the hardest time finding a good front basket.
My choices from around the city are any of the Axiom (http://www.axiomgear.com/products/gear/baskets/) ones and the Topeak (http://www.topeak.com/products/Bags) ones that the LBS can order in for me. I cannot find the wald (http://www.waldsports.com/index.cfm/wald933meshbasket.html) front one I really wanted so I'm going to try and settle.
I want one with a good Quick release system. So please help me pick out a good basket.
I prefer mesh but even those faux wicker ones look good. This will just be for quick small trips around town, no animals to be inside the basket( I'm lusting after a Basil one for that purpose)

I use the Wald 933 (http://www.waldsports.com/index.cfm/wald933meshbasket.html) so far I have been happy with it. Basil makes good stuff too.

Several of the bike supply houses carry them. Ask the local shops about ordering it, I am pretty sure SBS and QBP carry them.

well I dont know those places but I have inquired around here. Most of them seem to carry either the Axiom or Swagman brand. :(
I was going to order it from bikesomewhere.com but the shipping was more than they charge for the basket.

Oops sorry about the shorthand. QBP is Quality Bike Parts, they are a wholesaler out of Minneapolis, MN area. I am pretty sure they will sell to a Canadian bike shop. The other is SBS which is Seattle Bike Supply, out of Seattle, WA again I would be very surprised if they didn't sell to Canada. Yet another is J&B Importers, I don't know about them. But they have warehouses all over the US. Ask the local bike shop if they can order from any of these, if they say no, ask another one.

Thanks for the clarification:D I'm going to call around tomorrow and see if I can find one LBS that can order one for me.
I just bought an Avenir Quick (Release) Bike Basket. It's really neat. I put about 13 lbs in it and it didn't break. It held up great. :D

I picked it up on Amazon.com: http://www.amazon.com/Avenir-Quick-Bike-Basket-Black/dp/B001V687QG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1249348963&sr=8-1
There are almost identical baskets all over the place from different manufacturers. Niagra Cycle Works ships to Canada and has a whole slew of baskets: http://www.niagaracycle.com/index.php?cPath=90_176
Good luck. :)

Thanks for the Niagara site:) Shipping there was a bit more reasonable. Egads I guess its because of the size of the package though
Your welcome. Yah, the box is pretty big but doesn't weight too much... I'd say, somewhere in the neighborhood of 4 lbs including box and all packing.
Let us know which one you choose and how you like it. :)

What bike did you put it on? I am thinking of putting one on my folder (low, just abowe the front wheel) now that the touring season is ended (extra weight).

I just installed one of those Wald 933 baskets.
Slick. Clever the way it locks in and out.

I bought the basket so I could use it on either y full-sized bike or my foldie. I've had it for less than a week so far. It's only been on my full-sized bike which is an almost 30 y/o Schwinn Collegiate.
The mounting bracket has to go over the handlebars to hold it up. It can only mount horizontally so I don't think it will work low just above your front wheel. BUT, if you have a front rack over your front wheel, you can buy a quick release basket made to sit on top of racks. :)

I think that the shop I've gotten the last three from order them out of the Norco catalogue (Not a Norco product, but distributed by them). I'm in Victoria, but someone there should be able to order from them as well.
