Southern California - Proper SoCal Etiquette When It Comes To Finding a Suspected Abandoned Powerbar?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Gina has been cracking up about this one all day!:roflmao2:...She took along a chocolate "Zone Perfect" bar on our ride today. When we hit the coast stop she pulled it from her bag then figuring it might be a bit melted, said she was placing it in the shade for a bit so that the chocolate covering could harden back up.
So she placed it on the counter near the sink of the little shack type buildings at the rest stop. She then walks over and sits on the bench about 5 feet away. So she's talking with a couple of friends when 4 racer looking riders approach the stop. One dude stands there for a couple of minutes then snatches the bar and begins to open it.
Gina shouts over,"Hey, that's my bar!". D'oh! The guy is pretty embarrassed as he returns it to Gina and says he thought maybe a rider had accidentally left it there. He remains there for a while but his buds sort of raz him about the situation so he gets on his bike and leaves without his buds!:p
So is there a rule for lifting a "might have been abandoned bar"? Maybe a sticky on the topic to save further embarrassment!:roflmao2:
Would you ask around first or just go for the kill?:p
I don't know if I would eat something that I found, even if it was in a wrapper.
Who am I trying to kid? I would have scarfed it down so quick that by the time Gina said something all that would be left is an empty wrapper.

I am amazed at people who eat food they just find lying around.
When I was in college I worked in a pizza restaurant. One night a guy came up to the register to pay his bill and get a box to take home his leftover pizza slices. When he got back to his table the leftover pizza was missing. A man at the next table had taken it and was eating it because he though the first guy had left it behind.

Looks like you never made it to lesson #2, If you let it set in the shade for a couple of minutes, the chocolate hardens back up!:thumb:
Lesson #3... If she likes the bar, she will eat it. If she doesn't like it, she WON'T eat it!:p

I learned Lesson #1 in Dallas, in the summertime. Where it's 90 in the shade. Ain't no way that chocolate is coming back, so it's on to other supplements that work well in the heat. I will say Gu gels in your back pocket in 100 degree heat aren't much better. But at least they don't make your hands messy....

Well, she likes licking fingers so it's no big deal.
Dallas?.......there's a reason I stuck "SoCal" in the thread title!:p

I may take an empty shopping cart belonging to a customer left in an isle in Home Depot, but never an energy bar.

I once found an unopened granola bar floating down the narrows in Zion. Plucked that sucker out of the water and ate it right there.

The former owner of the company I work for currently would take food off of your plate right in front of you, while you were eating. Without even asking.
An engineer in the same place would eat food off of the floor. He later changed his name to Leslie after a certain type of life altering operation.
I would not eat around either.

I used to work with a married couple, both engineers (back in the good ol days). They had a beautiful house up on the cliffs of Corona. Both made good money, had all the toys, boats, hang gliders, bikes, hot tubs but if you left 3 french fries on your plate after lunch..."hey, you done with them fries?"...:roflmao2:
Sumthin' about them engineers, I guess!:p

5 feet away? What was she thinking?
Maybe the poor guy was bonking/caloric deficit? I've eaten soggy nachos off the top of a full trash can when I bonked at the Hadley's nut stand and had run out of money; she's lucky he gave it back.
I am amazed, what with all of the tales of tampered food, that ANYONE would eat something that they just "found" and presumed was "abandoned." Asking for a case of botulism or worse if you ask me.
$2 powerbar vs. $1500 (or more) hospital bill. Seems like a no-brainer but then anyone who would just eat something they found prolly doesn't have any brains to begin with.

^Clearly you've never had a proper bonk. (Which is something to be proud of.)
When I was younger and dumber, I would occasionally get stranded with no money and no calories far from home--you start scanning the road's shoulder for chewing gum, or any loathsome, indigestible thing that might possibly contain calories.

I've never eaten anything I found on the road (or anywhere else) because I either pack enough supplies for my ride, or have the cash on hand to deal with that emergency...
Gina should have told the guy to keep the bar as she visibly recoiled from his presence...

Everyone knows the 5 second rule. Drop something on the floor and you have five seconds to get it and eat it. It is a Rule. There is also the 36 inch rule. Place wrapped food down and move more than 36 inches away from it and it is abandoned food. California Bicycle code 21550.A. Silly girl should have known that leaving food that far away someone could also call “Dibs” and the food would transfer to the “Dib” caller, California Bicycle code 21551-A1. Just let her know that I for one know these rules and will adhere to them when and if I see her again. She could only hold off the acquiring of her wrapped abandoned food with a rock-paper-scissors challenge before the food is opened and eaten. Know you know and no longer have an excuse.

How complex is that?

who is this "gina"?
Common curtness would say ask if this was some ones. If it was not then yes you take your life our should we say your bowels into your own hands:>**** I can appreciate hitting a wall and not having anything that can get you going again. I now carry money and sometimes credit card on all of my rides even if I am doing a sprint ride.
Yes lesson #1 is do NOT take anything that will melt unless you will eat it melted.
But don't forget to carry the essential spare tire and two tube's with you also it suck getting 25 miles into a long ride and blowing both out and having to sit there and beg from your buds:>****

Who would jack this Sweet Gina for a bar? Good thing the Leaky Fountain Boyz weren't around or things might have gotten ugly!:D
Bar was set in the shade, then she sat on a bench to rest which was a few feet away.

A chocolate bar-shaped thingy left randomly in a crowded area? That reminds me of the pool-party scene from "Caddyshack" :D (you sure it wasn't a Baby Ruth? :D )
