I work at a large sporting club that has, amongst other facilities, a swimming pool (recently re-opened after a major renovation).

The main pool and the kiddies pool are both connected to the same filtration system, so when some child has a bit of a "whoopsie" (and we're talking the solid kind) the pool gets shut for 4 hours so that the system can run a full cycle.

Ok, kids have accidents - this I know. However, the club sells the waterproof swimming style nappies (diapers) cheaply right by the side of the pool. It was noted in last months newsletter and message from the GM that it had happened 4 times in one week after the re-opening. People were asked to keep a better eye on their kids etc.

It happened again today. A number of members have chewed my ear about it and I'm in a completely different area!

Seriously...how hard is it to watch your kid and put the waterproof (ie keep the mess in) nappy/diaper on it?

why can't you ban the offenders and their parents from the pool?

This thread is funny. I don't have kids nor do I wish to have them but I have noticed that whenever parents go in public with their offspring they are off duty. The kids run around, scream, pee on the floor/ground and make completely asses of themselves right in front of the parent. Parents do nothing and carry on about their business. I am sure this happens at public pools. It is not the job of the parent to watch over their kids but for the lifeguard. If I were you and witnessed this I would have a few words with the parents. Also, if the same kids are pooping in the water, the parents should be banned from the pool for a week to teach them a lesson. The pool is not able to generate revenue so why should the parents be allowed to come in at their own leisure?

Um.... thanks for the generalization.
My kid is expected to be on his best behavior out in public. He has a longer leash at home (so to speak). Some of us parents actually do raise our kids.

Anyhow, I always used a swim diaper with my son. I also waited for him to do his duty at home before we left. It really is not that complicated. Ban the idiot parents.

Ban the idiot parents.

Given that it's the children pooping in the water, wouldn't it make more sense to ban children under the age of say, five from using the pool?

Edit: I wonder at what point it becomes cost effective to have a separate filtration system for the kiddie pool section in order to avoid having to shut the entire pool system down for half the day.

^^ I don't think that all parents are this way as your note seems to imply. However, I will agree that repeat offenders should be banned. In fact, since the swimming style diapers are available by poolside, they should be considered mandatory. If the parent does not buy one from the club, they should provide an equivalent. Even first time offenders should be banned for a period of time. There's no excuse for poop in the pool especially when the appropriate products are available to help prevent this.

The parents can prevent it. Kids need to be acclimated to swimming as early as possible. Plus they love it. Why punish them for an accident?
That age needs to be dropped significantly.

I'm not sure that the offenders have been identified. Sure, you might know what 3-4 people it might have been, but at point of 'detonation' you can bet your ass that the offending child was quickly removed by the parent. I'll ask the pool guys if they know who it was (but note here that the Chinese staff generally don't like direct confrontation and would not challenge anyone).

I might also point out that the club does serve alcohol, so 3-4 chatting mothers with a couple of empty chardonnay bottles at a table is not unheard of. The pool guards and staff are constantly going beyond their duties. Some kid wandered off out of the pool area last week (in direction of changerooms/toilet) and the parent shouted at the lifeguard for not watching her kid!

The filter is some new fangled ionisation/irradiation system with little or no chlorine. Since the pools are rather small it was probably much cheaper to link them.

Most large pools require the "little swimmers" (diapers). Staff/lifeguards should peruse the area occasionally, and kick out any swimmers without the proper gear. It's a serious sanitation issue, it should be worth the extra effort by the staff.

I presume that the staff police this, but don't know how or know for sure.

Kids can pull them down, but if mother is off somewhere else...:innocent:

yeah, if the mother is off somewhere else *and* drinking. What kind of club will serve alcohol or let alcohol be consumed in the pool area?

Why don't they have their kids have a poo before swimming?

CbadRider
08-03-09, 12:57 PM
Because kids can't always control when they poo. If you gotta go, you gotta go. For small children, you can usually tell when they need to go because they dance around or grab themselves. Parents should be vigilant and pull the kid out of the pool at the first sign.

Yeah my mom told me when I was really little if she put me in the bath I would well, start to go. The warm water I guess...anyway she would grab me and put me on the toilet.

I bet if they had the kid run around for a bit it would make them have to go to the bathroom, exercise gets things moving...

I'm not allowed in pools, Judge's orders. I think you all know why.

4 times in 1 week after re-opening? Sorry, only solution is to make 'em swim around with it. Sounds to me like parents of the responsible individuals have an "it's someone else's job to fix it, not mine to prevent it" attitude. Make their precious snowflakes splash around with a few floaters in the pool.

Either that or go out and drop a deuce on the car hood of the offending party. Leave a note: "This doesn't have to happen a second time."

Country club?

Almost.

Large and fancy Yacht Club.

At least the kids have never (to my knowledge) dumped on the 10 pin bowling lanes, the squash courts, the gym, or any number of other rooms and facilities...but if I ever find a wee little jobbie in one of my rowing boats (I'm the rowing coach) there will be hell to pay!

The diapers to the kids and then the parents to the kids.

I was thinking that a couple of wraps around some whiney mothers head and mouth would do the trick.

One of my college summer jobs was lifeguard which lead to a supervisor position, which led to a manager position...throughout it all there was much pooping.

One of the better ways (if it works and the people have dignity) is to shame people into it (meaning watching their kids). Make a big deal about it when it happens and make sure you blame someone or else everyone will blame you, (as you have learned). When the pool is down and no one knows whose fault it is they will blame you.

also banning people isn't as easy as you might think, especially a country/ yacht club where there are paying members. If it is a pool in a condo association the pool committee will override you as well, very annoying. Also you can say they are banned but what if they don't leave? You look like a fool and lose what shred of discipline you once had. I had a group of 13 year olds (why some pools allow children as young as 12 in without an adult is beyond me) tell me they were not going to leave after I was trying to uphold a week long "ban" and I had to call the cops because they just kept coming back in (the cop was very cool about it even though I felt silly calling the cops for the situation).

And yes the yacht/country clubs have a worse "I am here for me, and you will watch my kids" sense of entitlement than most pools.

What good do the diapers do? If the kid is in a diaper, doesn't the poo still touch the water? My little ones wear the swim diapers and I know the are not watertight.

I never really got that either, but they are the rules...as in county health codes which they do actually check at all pool facilities. At least near me.

Sit in your guard chair with one of these bad boys and see how many kids misbehave or parents decide to lip off to you.

More details from the gossip mill at the staff lunch table...

Apparently there were 3 mothers with kids who left all of a sudden just before the 'device' was found. Research is being done to see if we can ID these 3 from the bar/food records.

I'll keep you posted!
