so another week has gone by, and I've yet to get into a car
am I car free?
i don't own one
i don't use them
or do i?
UPS arrived with a Next Day Air package, with a check
also a box of Meal Pack bars
a set of Schwalbe tyres
I've drank orange juice from a local market, etc...
another week of at least 20hrs on the bike
at least another 300 miles gone past under pedals
another week of washing my clothes daily out of a plastic bucket
another week, of working on bikes
a week passed of riding with my local club
a bunch of chit chat over carbon frames
campy, sram, shimano
this week, finds me packed
The Hunter packed for a trip up to Portland
hang out for a few days until my touring buddy arrives
hang out in the city
luckily I've made some contacts
so at least i have some reference points
an internet buddy, of whom we've realized that our Bicycle Practice is very much in parallel
has invited me along with another of his buddies, for a 7 day tour around Mt. Adams, a combo of pavement, and wilderness fireroads.
too bad scheduling conflicts
as my touring buddy will be shod in 11 feet worth of recumbent and BOB trailer...
off road touring, definitely my favorite
where nothing is sacred
to infringe upon what last stands of anything whole
nothing escapes our insatiable desire to explore frontier
if i were an giant intelligent ape, i'd run too...
our agenda is to tour down the coast to Ventura/LA from Astoria.
I'm packed
I'm anxious
I'm resting
its Amtrak
another Amtrak trip
trains and cars.... all burning fuel
in SoCal, my touring buddy says, "oh thats HAZE", Ventura has excellent air quality.
dude if that were water vapor it would be white, shinny, silver, not brown
its particulate mater
and that has come from Industry
out of an exhaust pipe of some sort
rather its a fireplace, a coal fired power plant, or 20 million cars
the obvious is the sky is tinged brown, the river does not flow, salmon gone, no bears on the beach, etc...
paradise lost?
perhaps...
a lone abandoned USA Gasoline refinery, oil pumps drone thru out time...
I've never been to Portland
must be the land of ports
along the Columbia
shipping
industry
a commerce hub, I imagine
so often these environs provide a fertile grounds for dichotomy
obviously Portland being a "platinum bicycle city"
and yet, I'm guessing its full of cars
full of petro-chemical burning transport
my buddy will be arriving via jet
a trail of exhaust injected directly into the stratosphere
where the sky has no defense
where the injections are too deep to allow for any lung effect
where there is nothing to filter our exhaust
perhaps like scaring across shallow lagoons from jet boats, across the backs of manatees
jet trails scar the sky
and for what?
to allow us the recreation of touring The Pacific Coast
vanity is shallow we all know
clad in Sidi shoes, from over seas
shod in bicycle parts from over seas
clothed in the latest Sportif from over seas
from town to town
buy buy buy
food and wears along the way
while I may marvel at what scenery there is
marvel i may
as my mind often times drifts away
when i'd try to read History thru plants
as if to ponder the age of a Eucalyptus and to know that they were never indigenous to these regions
to fathom the lay of the land
the way the roads have been laid
how the water would have flown
how culverts now redirect
and possibly, to wonder of fertile deltas, that once where
from eons of natural deposits
more than likely now, built upon
paved, dwellings in ticky tack, laid in right angles
their inhabitants...
well..
occupied by occupation
our time has been sold
and we must like this
as its obvious as to the length, desire, and effort we've made to produce our constructs
the land of ticky tack
the land of industry
the land of enterprise
a land of Civility... i suppose
the lay of the land
