Maybe I'm bored at work again but this is a harsh harsh example of why you shouldn't cross the street without a) looking, b) continuing looking while you cross and c) waiting for the green first.
It's not graphic as the traffic camera's situated far enough away but it's pretty scary.

What kind of sicko finds this stuff funny??!?!?!?? Jesus Christ, if someone could laugh at that they need help.

Repeat, it's not supposed to be funny. The guy has a lot of funny stuff on his site along with some pretty extreme and highly improbable videos there. No one's expected to get any amusement out of this.
However, I do expect people to remember what happened to that guy and think twice before doing anything stupid like blowing a light, especially on a bike since that gives you even less time to see what's coming.

It'd be nice to know what happened to the pedestrian...
He's prob dead. The car rolled over him after carrying him several feet. Compression in the springs as the car came down should have had a thorough effect. I'd like to know how many years the SOB got.

This type of accident can happen even if you don't blow a light. It could happen if the light is bright GREEN and you have the right to proceed! If a car decides to blow a red light and you have the green, you're pretty much done. Respecting traffic rules does not give you a better chance of survival if the motorist does not follow the rules.
The Ped had about 1 second to avoid this accident and since he was facing away, there was no way he could have avoided the accident.
This accident reminded me of a similar one that nearly happened to me last year. I was about fifty feet from an intersection just like this one when one car passed the stop sign without yielding. Another car smacked him on the side turning him in MY direction! I was fortunate there was a street pole that was just a five feet away from me and that is where the car smashed at full speed! The glass from the windows and lights sprayed my entire body. That pole saved my life.
Looking at that accident, you'll see the road was desinged by some traffic engineer who moved the trees back to protect the motorist. The street pole was also pushed back from the sidewalk thus offering the ped very little protection. The same pole that saved my life was about 10 feet from the Ped who got runned over in the accident. This is what happens when streets are designed for the safty of the motorist and not for peds.

That's actually interesting to me because i've had something EXACTLY like that happen to me only I had to stop right before the intersection to tie my shoe, 5 seconds later that scenario happened and the 2 cars ended up about 3 feet from me on my knee ... kinda freaky ... you can do a lot to prevent accidents but sometimes fate deals you hands like that.

Closest I ever came to something similar was at age 13 in school. School's out, about 20-30 students all crammed on the corner of an intersection waiting to cross, the light goes red, I start to cross without looking (hey, I was 13), and this great big truck had decided he was going to run the red at well over the speed limit - with dozens of kids standing right on the corner! Luckily some other kid grabbed me and pulled me back just as the moron barrelled right in front of me.
There's a lot of massively incompetent and dangerous idiots out there.
Statistically speaking, it's just a matter of time before some planet-killing asteroid does eventually hit Earth and wipe us out. Sometimes I wish it would hurry up and get here.

...speaking of protection for pedestrians, there is a nasty habit in the uk of using soft polythene bollards on pedestrian islands. On Saturday mornings I always see some that have been totally collapsed by some drunk driver. It may have saved the lives of plenty of bad drivers, giving them a second chance to mow down a pedestrian. It offers no protection to anyone standing on the island.

i was reading somewhere, that the dude passing the road is alive (but with many injuries) but the driver of SUV has died :(

Investigators said that at the time of the accident the crosswalk signal was red, and therefore Tegtmeyer should not have been crossing the street. They also reported that Tegtmeyer miraculously escaped alive because the dent in the side of the Subaru caused by the crash created a hollow space that allowed the vehicle to roll over him without crushing him to death. Neither vehicle was carrying any passengers, and both drivers escaped with only minor injuries.

I was very confused by the whole thing, because it did seem like a few things were amiss, like which vehicle had run the red, and was the pedestrian crossing against the red?
Well, now it seems he was crossing against the red. Which just starts the next question - didn't he see the SUV coming towards him, didn't he look, what?
And apparently the driver of the PT didn't notice ALL the cars on her street stopped, or that the light was red for 28 seconds before the crash. And from what info I have gleaned, no charges have yet been filed. WTF???
I hope, at the very least, that that woman is not driving anymore. Jesus.
I know, I know, most likely nobody here can answer any of these questions. I guess I'm also half-ranting. I really want to know what happens for some bizarre reason. Whether it's testosterone-fuelled kids or hopelessly incapable pensioners, they should be off the roads if they screw up like this - they're dangerous!

I saw this from the originating news station. The pedestrian did in fact live. The car that was hit was a Subaru, and I don't recall any injury report at all on the driver of that vehicle. I could be wrong, but I don't recall one. The driver of the PT that blew the light was an elderly lady. I want to say she was 77 years old but I'm not going to swear to that detail.

Even if the car coming from the right had the green, why didn't they see the ped? It looks as though the person crossing would have been hit anyway, or at least came very close. The driver that rolled over the ped should have seen him and been slowing even if on the green. Just because you have the right-of-way doesn't mean you shouldn't be watching. We, as cyclists and peds, know that better than anyone.
I also know that many roads, even in busy commercial/residential areas, have (for the expedience of the car drivers) speed limits of 35-45+ mph. Being that EVERYONE goes at least 5 if not 10 or 15 over the limit at all times with no regard to peds, children or other vehicles then people will die regularly. I used to laugh when my dad would get mad at people and say "driving is not a game - your only goal shouldn't be just not getting caught by the police", but I don't anymore. Violating the rights and safety of others is the core of all the world's troubles. It creates a rift in social structure and a decline in civility, which naturally leads to local and universal discord, from the menial vandals in our towns to the war mongers of world history. Jeesh, and all because we're rude! Some "slippery slopes" ARE true.

Am I the only one to have spotted the root cause of why the pedestrian was where he was, and how he ended up getting hit?
It's really fairly simple. Yes, the pedestrian was crossing against red, but he figured he wouldn't be hit by the SUV.
Here's my take on it. The pedestrian did see the SUV coming (the one that hit him), but that SUV was in the left lane, and wouldn't have hit him if no other vehicle interfered! The SUV would have passed by in the left lane at the instant the pedestrian was in the right lane... that's why he thought he was safe.
What took the pedestrian by surprise, was the car hitting the PT Cruiser that went thru' red. This knocked the SUV off course into the right lane, where it then hit the pedestrian.
That's it! A jaywalking ticket for the pedestrian, a red light ticket (+ careless driving) for the old lady in the PT Cruiser, and a red light ticket for the station wagon waiting to turn left (he was way over the stop line, and partly in the next lane to boot!). :rolleyes:
I'm wondering if a) this was florida and b) if the old lady could even see the road. Not to rant but *some* people out there driving can't even read the label on their medication.
Damn-She(the PT cruiser driver) never even hit her brakes until midway through the intersection.
I hope the ped recovers fully, and the PT cruiser driving privelages are revoked permanently(jailtime is wishfull thinking in the US-she should also lose her ENTIRE estate towards the victims rehab, pain and suffering.)
-There are some intersections I ALLWAYS dismount my bike and walk across in the crosswalk, I usually eyeball drivers pretty good while crossing too-now I will even moreso.
Hmmmm, I can see it now that vid could make a very good commercial for Depends. Bet the ped wishes he was wearing some. Or maybe he wishes the old lady was wearing them.

I believe senior drivers are a BIG issue. One almost left hooked me yesterday at an intersection and another crossed into oncoming traffic and crashed head-on into my mom's car. My mom's ok now but s**t, there needs to be a law that folks need to retake their road test after a certain age or something
