BMX - Too old to start racing??

Lately I've had an interest in dirt racing BMX. I bought a Redline a few months ago, mostly to "re-live" my teenage years.

Now, before I get too involved in this... is an old guy supposed to graduate to a 24" or can I stick with my 20"?

My dad is 38 and just started racing a 20" this year because he hates cruisers. Ride whatever you're more comfortable on.

I talked with a guy that belongs to our local club. He tells me that the club *recommends* that novices begin with a 20" until they reach expert. Then try the 24's. Many find the 20's just as fun.

I am only 5' 2" and still got some weight to loose. I can ride a 20 and not be uncomfortable or look goofy. And the 20 is a lot funner to ride than my Jamis and Bianchi combined!!

Oh this is interesting news to me. I am your dad's age and was led to believe by a friend that I had to race cruisers. I do a good amount of riding and racing on a road, mtb and track bikes so I need to think if whether a 24" wheel will feel more normal or if I should just go with 20" which I do think would be more fun.

I know this thread is over a month old,But I ride both 20 inch and cruiser. my cruiser has the new Geometry, it is like a large version of a 20 inch.You can feel the difference between the 2 ,But only in the size.

Yes, I revived the thread b/c it seemed recent enough and covered topics I had questions about: age and wheel size.

What would you recommend for a guy getting back into bmx after 25 years or so? As I said, I race other disciplines and therefore bigger bikes, so a cruiser might make more sense. I keep going back and forth.

What cruiser do you have?

It would depend on how any racers you get on a given day, but typically where I'm at if an old guy is racing a 20, he is racing with much much younger riders. A few of the old guys run both. I think because they have developed enough to pretty much smoke in the old class and hold their own with the young guys, or they have been racing for many years and don't need a refresher.
If you have not raced in a while, I would say go cruiser unless you don't mind losing a lot and being reminded how much it sucks getting old.
I just started racing last year. I am 33 and I rode my bmx EVERYWHERE except a track until I was done with high school. Then the bikes went away for about 10 years.
I used the old "well if my kid is going to do it, I want to be there with him" excuse to buy a bmx bike again. I was sorta pushed towards cruiser too, but I am 6' 4" and three bills, so twenty never really crossed my mind.

just started racing again at 39. after a 25 years. love it can't get enough. love it so much.
the old guy groups at our track are getting big. full gate for 28 & over Inter and 7 man gate for 28 & over Novice. big fun
