Northern California - Mid Year Status

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I was looking over my stats for the year, and realized I have to ramp up the riding! :innocent:
In my stats, I am not including insignificant commute trips to the caltrain or grocery stores (short/flat), but I do include odd-ball errands that actually have some decent distance/elevation.
So far as of today (8/3), my 2009 year to date is at:
distance: 2,429 miles
elevation (climbing): 218,473 feet
Interesting to also look at the stats in a graph. Here is my distance by month... August is OK, since it is only a couple of days in ;)
But you can see:
- February into March: My back was messed up, took a break.
- April: Training for and then doing Devil Mountain Double
- End of June, early July: Wedding/Honeymoon
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2466/3786537798_1f00c35d99.jpg
My best month was April:
- 513 miles
- 45,916 feet of climbing
My goal is to try and match that for August!
I remember my beginning of year goals were something like:
- 5000 miles and 500,000 feet (see current stats above)
- sub 20 OLH (err.. haven't tried in a while, so still the same 21:20 or whatever).
- sub 60 min Diablo (65 min on a ride with Chris, Michael, Eric and Donald, maybe in Oct I'll get it...)
- Everest Challenge on the Tandem (still unknown if we will try this).
The Triple Crown idea did not come until a couple months into the year, on a Marin ride with Ruth, Pete and Ramon. We were wolfing down some food at Pt. Reyes St.
Well Ruthie and I did that one. :thumb:
Anyway,
How is everyone's year going? We are 7-months in, and it would be cool to hear how everyone is doing. :D
I do not have very accurate stats, but I belive since the start of 2009, I will take a guess that I have done a little over 2000 miles. I already completed my ultimate goal for the year, to complete my first century, and I have already done 2, with hopefully 2 more coming in august.
From now on, till the end of the year, my main goal is to get my weight down to about 185-190, so I can climb better. I lost 6.5 pounds in July, so that is all going well. Just have to keep it up.
I set up a couple other soft goals for myself, to climb 10,000 feet in a day and to ramp up to 150 miles in a day. The 10,000 feet I would like to reach by the end of summer and the 150 miles hopefully the same, but I will say by the end of October more realistically.
Lastly, for the Diablo Challenge, I want to hit 80 minutes in the climb from my previous time of 86. I think that is doable. Just got to ride more and get the weight down so I have more efficient usage of my wattage.
Really, all this is in preparation for my next year's goals, shown in my signature below. I like goals, it keeps you going.

I'm ahead of where I imagined I'd be capable of this year. I didn't ride at all from January 9 -> last week of March. April I had I think 400 miles.
May 8th is when I survived the WCC double metric. That was my first legit ride over 100 miles, and it was a cold, wet sufferfest. I finished that ride just about dead. Loved it.
Signed up for Eastern Sierra Double maybe 2 weeks later. Finished ESD and felt great for having done so. Was shortly thereafter peer pressured into the Deathride. Around that time I also decided I should do 2 more DCs for the jersey. I signed up for Knoxville and Death Valley Fall.
I finished the DR in under 10 hours. Was happy about that. Took Mt. Tam DC on short notice last week when Jack decided he wouldn't be able to make it. I am happy to have survived that, even if I'm ridiculously sore. In fact, the only time my lower back wasn't hurting today was when I was hunched-over riding my heavyweight campus bike to lunch.
I think my goal this year was to ride 10 miles/day, so 3560 for the year. In April, May, June, July and by the end of this week I'll have tripped 3000. I'm way ahead of pace.
My new goal should be to eat fewer than 20 clif bars/week and get down to my quick weight of 170-172 instead of this 180-185 I've been slogging around at. Also, 5500 miles. That's 500 miles/month from now through the end. One last one: I'm sort of obsessed with riding my single speed up OLH. That has got to happen one of these weekends.
I don't know that it's said often enough, but I'm personally very grateful to have met so many of you from these forums. This year has been great so far, and I owe a lot of that to you people pushing/pulling and giving me some friendly competition!

July was by far my best month yet this year: 718 miles and 44,300' of climbing. I did three centuries and a 90 mile ride and had a 19-day bike riding streak and rode 25 days out of the 31. My previous longest riding streak this year was 4 days
So far I'm still keeping up with my century a month thing (with the exception of April where my longest ride was only 97 miles) and I rode the death ride which were my not-too-lofty goals for the year.
http://img266.imageshack.us/img266/3061/monthlymileage.png
3460 miles so far which puts me on pace for 5874 for the whole year.

A lot of riding between March - May and then it fell off a cliff. I blame my failure to complete Death Ride, and the subsequent after-effects, on my low mileage so far.
My consolation rests in the fact that we still have, at least, one solid month of beautiful weather to get some longer rides in. That should dovetail nicely, for me, when I have to start tapering off towards the later end of this year...
I had no particular goals, in 2009, other than to be a stronger rider. All you guys completing double centuries are just nuts - a rare breed - to be sure. My hat's off to you: I could never do that.
I'm happy just to be riding with some really good people and will do my best to hang in there during our weekend suffer-fests. :thumb:

I ordered a smaller front chainring for my fixie - it'll be here this week. :innocent:
We would need to find a way to make sure Chris can't coast...SS on OLH would be cheating. :D

You only failed the DR because of a crash! Also, I'm pretty sure I just finished the Mt. Tam double, and that you beat me up Diablo the week before, so never say never!
woah, you guys are putting up serious mileage!!! Started slowly this year after the crash on Hamilton. I basically lost 8 weeks. Still, it's hard for me to match these totals as I only have so much time I can be away from the house ;)
Total Distance: 1567 miles
Total Climb: 67000+ feet
On track to best my 2350 miles from last year. Need some more climbing, though. I've gotten less due to my commute to the East Bay being relatively flat. Good news is that I've lost over 15lbs since the start of the year (most of it losing the post-crash lbs).

Total by bike:
Bike Friday: 822 miles
Tandem: 350 miles
Road Bike: 250 miles

Hmm, maybe I should just sell that stupid carbon bike after all...

Santana Arriva (Old Tandem) 1,318
Cannondale CAAD9 (White One) 560
Cannondale CAAD8 (Black One... sold) 269
Calfee Tetra Tandem (New Tandem) 208
Cannondale CAAD4 (commuter) 82 (plus probably around 700-800 miles of short commute/errand trips)

I'd consider doing OLH on fixed too. I've done Hamilton, Diablo and Tam on it so far. I know Ramon has too. Maybe a fixed gear BF ride in the future including OLH. Right now I need to get my mileage up. I did 10,000 last year, but this year has been major suckatude:( Time to stoke the furnace.

I'm sensing there's a lot of you excel-driven obsessive number-crunchers! My stat-keeping is crap, so I have no idea how many miles I've ridden. But I want to chime in that you're all positive peer pressure that gets me out of the door. I don't know how many times I've said to myself, "Do ya wanna get embarrassed again at the next BF ride? Well, do ya, punk?" :-)

It all looks like BikeWire.net stats to me :P Easy enough to log your miles that way.
I'm too lazy to build graphs and upload them for you to look at, so here are the numbers...
YTD: 4052 miles, 130,779 feet
May was my biggest month with 685 miles 24,957 feet.

Just checked out that website. Pretty awesome. Now a user. I started logging all my riding starting with the Diablo KOM, so I had a few entries to put in there right off the bat. That makes it nicer looking already.

I'm at 5124 miles. No idea on the climbing... but I like to. :D
This year I've been doing way too many events. 4 crits, 2 road races, a time trial, 4 Double centuries, the Death Ride, and the Tour de Cure century. I also did 7 Wednesday night mountain bike races.
Now that Mt. Tam is done I can exhale a little. Probably jump on the mountain bike more often for some singletrack sweetness. Maybe do the Knoxville double to get a 5th in the year. We'll see.

This hasn't been the greatest year for me, with lots of back problems in May, June and July. I've still put in 2456 miles so far this year, but that's far less than the more than 4,000 I had at this point last year. I also missed out on one of my milestones, the Death Ride, only finishing 2 passes due to a stomach bug.
I hope to finish much stronger, though - I'm doing the Crater Lake Century in a couple of weeks, then I'll be preparing for the Death Valley Double - it'd be my first double, so we'll see how it goes. Last year I got a little burnt out and didn't ride much in November and December, so I'm hoping to keep motivated this year.
JB
5640.4 miles, 14.38 avg speed according to bikewire. No idea on elevation as I don't have an altimeter/gps and usually don't map out the rides on bikely.
I heard you need someone to help fill out the left hand part of the distribution, I'm at 1659.3 for the year - haven't tabulated elevation, and only got Garminified in May.
Still, I'm on track to beat last year :(
From my Garmin 705 with altimeter
2009 Activities 3,577 miles with 129,060 feet of climbing which includes road, track and trainer sessions.

Boy, this sure looks like feast or famine doesn't it? Well, in February, I spent a week and a half as traveling course marshall for Tour of California, where I was 1.5 weeks off of the bike. The sheer torture of it all!
Then I got momentum, building up miles, and then, I had struggles on Davis Double and Eastern Sierra Double. I didn't think about it till recently, but I guess that took a lot of enthusiasm out of me (that's why the huge drop-off in June). But looks like I got my mojo back in June. However, August may be a down month ... had to skip Mt. Tam / Marin ride due to on-call, and I've got another on-call weekend at the end of the month. What's up with that?
I actually had no goals, so this is fine. However, if I don't have any goals, why do I always get sucked into these Death Ride and Double Century training rides?
I'm riding again. Yay! :)

I'm already at last year's mileage (~2040) and I'm 151,000 feet, about 20K more than last year.

My stats are almost exactly like yours - 2008 miles and 146,377 ft of climbing. It's more riding than I've done in the past.
Only bad thing is that I'm riding more solo now, haven't had time to join the BF rides that much :(.

3480 Miles so far for 2009 when I rode 4000 in 2007 and 4000 in 2008. I completed Davis Double in May, my first double. I am lucky to be having my best year ever. I posted 518 miles last month, so I am still holding a good pace. My left knee, which is garbage to begin with, is acting up a bit, but nothing I can't HTFU my way past. (actually HTFU plus a heat and daily stretching routine)

5 days a week: Open the garage, shoo my dogs to the backyard, grab one of my bikes, open the garage door, point my bike and start pedalling.
I'm not sure how high or far I've gone - but I sure have enjoyed every bit of it.

I'm only at ~2,450 miles YTD for 2009. This will probably be the first year I have fewer miles than the prior year since picking up cycling again. 2010 might even be worse because first baby will be born... I didn't start riding this year until April (due to work scheduling). Last year I ended at ~8,200 miles; ~7,150 miles in 2007; just ~5,000 miles in 2006; ~3,500 miles in 2005; and less than 2,000 miles in 2004 (when I bought my first road bike).

Being home all the time helps... 3787 so far, shootin' for 6K this year ...it's a goal. Lost another eight or so pounds, another twenty or so to go...
This year kinda fell into the local racing scene - while not exactly burning up the pavement, it's fun, social, and a challenge! I'm stronger as a result, and the goals have changed some.
Make the Century easy, then prep for the 200
Break 26 for 10 TT, 1:05 for 25 TT
Contest the local "B" crit
Improve my "sprint"
Most important, keep getting out there and have fun!
... and, meet Taxi some day

I think about the only way I could show up on those graphs is if you made the Y-axis logarithmic. Then my mileage would appear at the bottom of the graph.
On the plus side, since March I think I have ridden a majority of weekends, and I have been hauling my fat, saggy carcass up OLH or Kings every weekend, so, there's that.

My 2009 according to Mr. Garmin:
2143 miles
112873 ft of climbing
101 separate rides
My original goals:
3000 miles - I'm on pace for that...
Not crash and end up in the emergency room (again) :( - so far so good...
Lose 30 more lbs - not so much... too many post ride lunches with Bigbossman! :D

98 more miles and 10,800 feet to go
