Southeast - Good shops in Charlotte?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

So I'm moving out of Atlanta in the next few weeks for a new job in Charlotte.
I've got a great relationship with a shop here (Scott Mosko at the Bicycle Doctor on Norcross, total shill, I know) which is going to have to end since I'll be 4 hours up the road.
Anyone have any shops they'd recommend in Charlotte? I'm primarily a roadie who's going to be in the market for a new bike (the BMC Racemaster has my eye at the moment) and want to know who's going to be the best to start with in the city.

I have been going to Carolina Bicycle Company in S Charlotte since I moved here in April. Shop manager Ben is pretty cool and has good taste in bikes. They are a BMC dealer. I would not hesitate recommending him.
Where are you coming from in Atlanta? I was there for the past 2 years in the Sandy Springs area.

Buckhead area. I rode with the Dunwoody Cycling guys the last few years. A bit bummed about losing my Saturday/Sunday group ride staple as well.
I've bought 2 bikes from Bicycle Sport on Selwyn Avenue. They seem to be ok. Bike Source @ Park Rd Shopping Center has been pretty helpful and I've bought a few things there.
The best place, in my opinion, to buy clothes, gels, helmets, parts, etc. is Performance Bike on South Blvd. Hands down best prices and customer service.
For online, probikekit.com is hard to beat.
Welcome to the area.

What part of Charlotte will you be living or working in? There are numerous "good bike shops" in the Charlotte area in Concord, Mooresville and Charlotte proper. I've found it helpful to have one that I was not only comfortable with but also convenient.

Cool. I rode with them a few times when I happened to be in town on the weekend. I mostly rode in SS and Vinings group rides during the week. The riding here is pretty good. I do miss the steep hills of N Atlanta and the mountains of Greenville, SC though.

I'll be working/living from home. So likely Charlotte proper. From what I can find on Google Maps, there's no shortage of shops.
I like the one I go to now because its pretty chill and small. Run by a single guy, basically. So you can hang around, shoot the breeze about bikes, that kinda stuff. I know that's a bit of a one-off situation, but that kind of shop feel (informal, chill, nice staff, decent products) is what I'm looking for. But I guess every cyclist looks for that kind of shop too.

I enjoy the atmosphere at Bolt Brothers in Waxhaw which is 15-30 minutes south of Charlotte and a popular jumping off area for country rides.
You will have plenty to choose from. In the 30+ years I've lived in Charlotte, I can't say that I've been treated badly by any of the shops I've visited. They all have their loyal customers and I suspect they have critics too. I suggest visiting several, starting with the closest and working out. I'm sure you will find one you like. Some are definately more "laid back" than others, but you'll figure that out soon enough.
On another note, a couple of resources for finding local group rides etc. is weeklyrides.com and tarheelcyclists.org. Check them out.
Welcome to the Queen City!

My favorite LBS is Bicycles East (http://www.bikeseast.com/), good service and very accommodating -
I've placed several orders w/ PBK and they are tops -

I live pretty central and I like most of them as well:
Bike Sport is my favorite, small laid back BMC/Trek, on Selwyn, I could (and do) spend a lot of time/$ there
Bike Source is a block away, larger, Specialized and Cervelo, larger and less "shoppy"
Uptown Cyclery, great CS, Giant, not a lot of experience w/them
SouthPark Cyclery, Bart is very well known, Bianchi/Pinerello, cool shop with a MTB overhang :-)
Performance, decent CS, good for little things....basic Performance

+2 on Bolt Brothers
Bolt Brothers is going through a transition and is "by appointment only" right now. IIRC when I spoke with Will Bolt a couple of weeks ago, he said he plans to restart regular hours a few days a week. As far as I can tell it will be a one man operation.

I second that, I love Bicycle Sport, that's the only shop I go to. Mainly because of Brian & Mike there the best mechanics I have been to in 30+ years of riding. Everyone there lives bicycling. I live 40 Miles away now and its still my only bike everything store.

I think they closed the shop.
It is my understanding that Will is opening by appt. only for the time being.
+1 For Bicycle Sport on Slewyn. I'm new to cycling but they made me feel right at home. They seem to have pretty good prices and the people are very friendly. Oh and they have a great shop dog, Soda! The only mechanic I have dealt with is Brian and he has been great.
I've been to Performance Bike and Bike Source and they are pretty well-stocked with gear, but as TysonCook said Bicycle Sport feels more "shoppy" and thus I like it better. Hope that helps.

As I stated before, Bolt is closed. Somebody else will be taking over the shop and will be opening shortly.

I hear the new Waxhaw shop will be called Bike Depot.
I'am going to put my 2 sense in and say that Bicycles East is a great place to shop and Ride from with marked roots in downtown Matthews out to the country.. Rides on Saturday morning as well as singlespeed sunday..
