Foo - Harley apparel

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Do any of you have Harley gear? I've been looking at some boots mainly because I haven't seen anything quite as cool. They seem to be in a decent price range which is a shocker. I always thought Harley stuff was way expensive. How well does their stuff hold up? Is the gear worth the money, or is it the name selling the apparel?
Before any of you point to other boot companies and tell me how much better they are, I just want to say that I have searched long and hard for a pair of boots that I like, and these are it. I want to be comfy on the bike and look ok enough to walk around. These are the boots, if they can meet the longevity and durability criteria.
What size boot do you need?

That and they're clowns.
hehe - I don't have my stuff over here yet from my Mom's (vests, slinky arse high heeled knee kinda boots and some fringed chaps) - but will takes some pics of some of my jackets that I do have here ... even have a white totally fringed outfit skirt with leather jacket and fringed leather white boots. <shakes head> Lots of money spent on that stuff!!!
Have a most unusual Hooded leather "sweatshirt" kinda thing - very cool with a front pocket - bought it at a garage sale for $5 - husband was selling off ho-wife's stuff. I felt terrible purchasing it, but was glad I did. Even though I'm not part of that crowd anymore (hung with clubs) - I wear this hooded leather - it's so great with cool weather and the fact I can have another sweatshirt underneath is a plus.
... but you can't have them - they are a retired portion of me life - and are quite sweet looking too. You needs a good leather store - and one I mean - when you walk by - the leather smell just drawz you in ........
Old leather is cool, new leather is awesome. An expenditure ... yes - but it lasts and lasts - and it becomes more fitted to you the more you wear it.

The decent price range stuff from an HD dealer is a shocker
But, it is good stuff. Obviously Harley spec their stuff out but its
all good stuff. They dont peddle any junk. Im not a big chrome
guy, but even their chrome look-@-me stuff is better than Arlen Ness
or Custom Chrome or any of that stuff :)

How do you tell the a Hoover from a Harley?
How do you tell the a Hoover from a Harley?
The Hoover doesn't leak oil all over the floor of the garage?

With a Hoover, the dirtbag is on the inside.
I've got an FXRG leather jacket and it's great quality. It's new, so I can't speak for its longevity, but based on the research I did, they last and hold up excellently.

I still don't get why everyone hates on HD.
I just bought some new boots a couple of weeks ago. I went with SIDI though, mainly because I wanted boots that would actually protect me in the event of a crash. :)
I still don't get why everyone hates on HD.
Because too many of them are obnoxiously loud. Actually, obnoxious is too mild a term.

are very nice and well made and you don't have to experience the stigma of being another silly man in Harley garb.

Hate on HD? Too many R.U.B.s, not enough actual riders.
I like the bikes (well, the stripped cruisers... if you want a bagger, get a honda :D )

Overpriced for inferior technology and an overused name. I can get a Honda bike just as big, just as purty, that will last longer, and is more comfortable to ride, for half the price.
Because 40 grand for a Gold Wing is reasonable?

How many have you owned ?
When you go to sell your Honda, how much will you lose ?
On my last HD, I paid it off and made 2000.00. There will never, ever, ever
did I say ever, be a Honda that happens on. Or, BMW or Ducati or......<insert name here>..........
There are pages on the 'net showing statistics of HD's to have one of the
highest built/still in use ratio's of an vehicle ever built in the world, if you care to research this stuff...
Seeing how many '60's era Hondas vs. Harleys you see at a meet would bear this out.
To say the type of stuff you posted means you just dont know bikes, at all.

There's just as many metric cruisers that are too loud and poorly tuned.

REalistically, a lot of HD riders suffer 'Look-@-Me' syndrome,
but that doesn't have anything to do with how the bikes are made.

I've got a lot of co-workers who are Harley riders and have much Harley gear. I could ask around for opinion and/or best places to buy if you are interested.

I traded in my Kawasaki and I received $7,000 more than I owed on it. I could trade my MV Agusta in right now and get at least $6,500 more than I owe on it.
I've talked to a lot of Harley owners and just about all of them say the resale theory is a crock. Why would someone pay close to what a new bike costs for a used bike? It's also great having a Harley worked on around here, one of my dad's friends was put on a six month waiting list. They "repaired" his bike and gave it back to him and still had the same problem. The shop (authorized harley dealer) put him back on the waiting list.

Actually, you are completely right. 95% of all Harley's are still on the road. A pretty impressive number to say the least.

I had to get new tires on my bike. The nearest shop was 60 miles away and was a Harley shop. I called them up to make an appointment and they told me to just bring the wheels and new tires in. I told them I lived 60 miles away and if they couldn't get to it, just to let me know and I'd pick them up later. They said it was no problem, they could get it done in an hour or so.
I drove the 60 miles to the shop and dropped the wheels off. I reiterated my arrangement and they told me they would give me a call in an hour when the wheels were done. 2 hours later, I called to check on them, and they told me they had forgotten about them and they would get them done right away. 2 hours later, I went to the shop where I found out they were still sitting there, undone.
At this point, I was pretty frustrated. The head guy talked to me and said that his tire guy had left early or something. I again made the point that I didn't live in town and if they weren't going to do them, I would just leave them and pick them up later, but that I was quite dissappointed. They head guy told me that if I just wanted to wait for a bit, they would do them right then. I agreed.
Half an hour went by and the head guy came out and said that one tube was toast so I needed a new one, but the other tube was fine. Half an hour after that, he came back out and said that they had torn the other tube, but "Don't worry, we won't charge you for it." Another 15 minutes or so and he came back out to tell me they didn't have the right size tube, but they could order it. I was dumbfounded. I stammered around a bit, very angry at this point. He suggested something that might work and I gave him the go ahead.
Nearly 6 hours had gone by and they had finally finished. There was no discount on the bill, save for the new tube to replace the one they had screwed up. I gave them every opportunity I could so that I wouldn't be in the position I was finally in. I got the run-around, they destroyed my stuff, and in the end, offered me no discount for my troubles.
I was pretty dissappointed with the Harley experience.
So are you saying you'll buy SIDI boots now?

Thats most MC dealers Ive dealt with.
Japanese bike dealers are butchers for the most part.....
I only work on my own stuff but due to insurance reasons, had
to take my Softtail into the dealer to have them fix it. Sure
enuff, I didnt even make it home before the first problem arose,
and only went about 200 miles before problem #2 arose.
I think your problem could have happened at 85% of the shops you
might have gone to, not just HD specific.
Tires arent that hard, if you can do bikes, you can do MC :)

The tires on that bike were the originals. 1975. I'm not really keen on trying to remove 30 year old tires.

What's a RUB vs an actual rider?
If someone has money to deck themselves out in the "HD Uniform" and rides their MC, are they a RUB? IF they ride their bike on weekends, are they a RUB? (If you answer yes... how often do you ride your bicycle? Are you a Fred?)
Now... if someone gets a bike and just displays it in their garage, then I'd agree they're a RUB. Well, not really a RUB, since you have to ride it to be considered a biker.
If you have a bike - of any flavor - and ride it, you're a rider. Period. Doesn't matter what you wear or why you ride.
Get off your high horse and stop judging other riders. Ride your bike.

I paid big bucks for a pair of Harley boots once, just to have them fall apart after about a year.:( my bad luck I guess.
I have owned Harleys... may again in the future,,, true statements about the Hondas and Yamahas (Stars) but they still arent harleys and to some folks that means something.
The resale value myth is based largely on the mid to early nineties when there was a long waiting list for Harley, up to 3 years for some models. Then Harley opened another plant, increased production, and the waiting list went away. In those days you could roll a brand new Harley off the showroom floor, and sell it for 3k more than you paid for it.
They still hold their value better than jap bikes,, but not nearly the same as they used to.
As far as Harley gear, it is all outsourced to Taiwan, or Vietnam, or where ever,,, it is nothing special. I do ride in a pair of harley boots on occasion, but I got them on Sierratradingpost.com for next to nothing. There is better gear out there if you dont care about the Harley name on it.

I get where you're coming from skiahh, but even you have to admit...there are some folks that are trying entirely too hard, and it's obvious to anyone looking at them.
I am reminded of a special occasion trip to a very nice Italian restaurant my wife and I took to Durango. While we were enjoying an appetizer, a couple came in. They were festooned in every bit of gear in the Harley catalog. Harley bandannas, Harley boots, Harley jeans, Harley gloves, Harley jackets (no club designation, just what you can pick up in a store) over Harley T-shirts...and I found myself asking the question, "Did anyone have any doubts as to which brand of motorcycle you rode up on that the logo overload was necessary for clarification? We heard it a block away." They looked like clowns for a Harley-Davidson rodeo.
I grew up riding motorcycles though I do not currently own one (unless you count the early 80's Honda Sprees out in the shed). Personally, I'd have a lot more respect for these folks if they chose their riding gear based upon anything other than what the brand name logo was imprinted upon it, no matter how often they actually ride.
