Southern California - Good mechanic in San Diego?

I'm looking for a place to get my bike tuned up due to a few crashes in the last couple weeks. Any suggestions? Also do you think a general rule for mechanics is what you pay for is what you get? I should preface that I have the specialized roval wheels on my bike which seem to need a special spoke wrench that not a lot of places have so I think that limits my choices to UC cyclery and B+L. Any one have any experience with these guys? I have bought stuff in the past from UC and they seem to be nice guys, I stopped into b+l one day to get a bottle in the middle of a ride after my bottle had fallen out and gotten run over, they seemed a little snobby, but maybe that just happened to be one guy who was working there at the time. Anyway, any comments or suggestions would be appreciated. thanks!

The guys at B+L in Solana Beach will hook you up. Aside from having a great bunch of mechanics, they're a Specialized dealer. I don't know much about the San Diego store as I've only been there once and wasn't helped by anyone.

I bet Ron at Rose Canyon Cycles can fix your wheel... (been building wheels for something like 30 yrs...) Anyway, he built my bike and I couldn't be happier. His shop is the one on the service next the the I-5 in PB, the sign says Blacksmith Wheels or something like that.

Another vote for B&L in Solana. I usually do my own work, but the bald, younger mechanic there really knows his stuff.

If you're in north county go see Tom at Bicycle Warehouse in Vista. He really knows his stuff. Great guy too.

If you live anywhere near the Point Loma area pm me and I'll give you the number of one of the team jelly belly mechanics, that has a little shop in his garage. He is not cheap, but his work is perfection.

Agreed. Not sure which store you are talking about, but if it's the Solana Beach store, then ya. There are two guys that work the sales floor that are lame and kind of snobby. One of them is new and kind of a DB. But the mechanics there are great & very friendly. I personally take my bikes to Pacific COast Cycles in Oceanside. The owner/mechanic is great, especially with wheel stuff. He would love nothing more than to build some wheels for you. I also highly recommend Black Mountain. They are very professional, and whe I had a problem with the brakes on my mtb, instead of just bleeding them, the service manager actually took time to contact Magura to check on any issues and got upgraded replacement levers for free.

I like Adams Avenue Cyclery in North Park. Real bike riders here. They have something like $5.00 for 5 minutes for minor adjustments. I am not sure how it works but they tuned one of my bikes with old campy components for about $50.00. Runs like new.

I will second the folks at Adams Avenue, as they have always done good work for me. If you are in the Carmel Valley/Mira Mesa area, I can very highly recommend Mike at North of The Border Bicycles. He is the owner/mechanic and always does first rate work on my bikes.

Cool, thanks for all the suggestions, I ended up going to UC, they charged 60 for a tune up, not including replacing my brake cables. Good guys and took time to explain the problems. I'll keep these other guys in mind though next time.

glad you found a good place for you, I've always liked UC... really nice guys. My advice is if they gave you good service and you like them, stick with them and build that relationship... you may find if they know you and you go in for quick 5 minute adjustment, you won't get charged.
