recently replaced spindle in bb. Adjustment was perfect when I replaced it. was lubing chain, and noticed resistance in bb when backpedaling by hand. removed chain from chainring, and resistance remains when pedaling forward as well as back. I haven't had any trouble in riding it, nor has it made any sounds. The resistance is incremental (i.e. it's smooth, then a jump, then smooth, and a jump...)

I recently loaned my crank puller to a friend, so fixing it will have to wait. was planning on doing a century tomorrow. Is it possible the adjustment had just somehow become too tight? Just hoping someone could tell me what to expect when I open it up, and if it became too tight, how to keep it from happening again.

Yes it could have slipped - there are a number of possible scenarios for this to happen. Not knowing what sort of BB you have - suffice to say: Don't ride it until it's running smooth.

Is it safe to assume that there is no play at all in the spindle now? If so, and you want to back off a little on the cup you don;t absolutely have to take the crank off. Just back off the lockring a tad and then spin the hub cup back and re-tighten. Proly won't take more than a minute or two to try it and see if it does the trick.

unfortunately, there isn't enough clearance between the crank and lockring to fit my wrench in there to fiddle with the adjustment. But, no, there is no play. I am hoping that has somehow gotten out of adjustment, and that is all, and that the bb is not shot from being over tightened.
