Triathlon - Tri Bike Question

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

SO... I am looking at buying a full tri bike but have a question.
I currently ride a 52cm road bike.
The one I am looking at is a 53cm tri bike (quintana roo)
Is there a big difference? I know I wont be stretched out more as the top tubes are the same.
Let me know your thoughts before I pull the trigger.

You need to talk to a fitter at a good LBS, not an internet forum.
Best of luck,

i agree but i'll go one step further and say a tri specialist. there are a lot of lbs' that just do not know, care, or understand the correct tri positioning.
generally speaking however, it should work if the tt is the same but you would more than likely need to play with the stem and bar height. don't forget, on a tri bike there are different factors in sizing due to the angles of the seat and head tubes. often times the person ends up with a size smaller frame. in your case you would be concerned with whether or not you could shorten the stem enough for a proper fit. with that particular bike you might be very stretched out once you saddled in.

thanks. I ended up passing on it. I live in the tampa area so we have a few shops around that specialize in triathlon equipment. I just thought this was a heck of a deal. 04 QR Tequilo for $550. but I would rather not spend the money on a bike that wont fit...or I'll end up tinkering longer with.
I am still working on the conversion of my road bike to tri.

Thatīs easy enough. FF seat post, drop the stem, wheel cover and an aero helmet.

Oh err... actually...
from what i understand, it is a better idea to size down for a TT/tri bike. I was a 58 road but went to a 56 tri bike because that fit better.

+1 on the tri specific fitter, I had my heart set on a particular bike but when it cam time to buy it just didn't fit and I ended up with a Roo that is one size smaller than my road bike.

So its safe to say a good starting point for buying a tri bike is one size smaller than your road bike, then you need to do some fitting from there?
