Bearing in mind that I do not race, and am not worried about keeping up with the latest fads, but am perfectly happy sticking with a product when I find something I really like ...

... I am thinking of stocking up on tires when I see a whale of a deal. The ones I use are Vittoria Rubino clinchers. My question is: how long can you have them hanging around and not expect them to deteriorate? I would expect that a couple of spare sets would last me several years.

Thanks...Gary

I don't know how well today's tires will hold up over time, but I have slapped on 30 + year old tires on my older road bikes and ridden thousands of miles on them.

The secret, I think, is to keep them stored in an area without a lot of temperature variations. Preferably not in too cold an environment.
It seems, in my experience, that fluctuating temperatures seem to promote rot in the sidewalls.
The problem with storing is the odor that the tires give off, makes it necessary to satore them someplace other than in the house.
I store them in my basement which has a fairly even atmosphere year around.

If you want to store the tires a long time, make yourself a doughnut shaped tub, don't forget to make a top for it as well, store the tires in it and cover with them with talcum powder. Yes, this has been done and it does work, the talc keeps the tires supple and keeps them from drying out.

Keep them clean and dry and out of the sun and out of the smog. I still don't think I would trust 20-year-old tyres. By the way, innertubes do not store well in their original boxes, because they crack along the folds. I take them out, unroll them, gently inflate them, and hang them from wooden dowels.
