Ok, I mangled the top of the steering tube on a rock shox fork (cheaper model) while cutting it down. Can I just replace the tube, or am I stuck buying a new fork?

You could buy just the upper assembly (steerer, crown and stanchions as a unit), but it might not be cost effective. Marzocchi was the last one I knew of to offer pressing a new steerer in.

depending on the model, maybe you can get just the steerer and crown and reuse your current stanchions. if parts are hard to find, might be a good opportunity for a new fork upgrade.
