I'm interested in a bike like this for commuting/touring conversion. This one has the right geometry for me. The price ($220) seems high to me. I'm interested in opinions before I contact the seller (I know it may be snapped up).

VERY sweet old Ross Mt Hood mountain bike, from the infancy of the sport. Bullhorn bars, gold anodized Araya rims with matching
large flange Suzue hubs. Has a few little spots of rust here and there, but as far I have noticed through my reasearch, it is 100% original.
Right down to the grips and saddle. Even the tires!! Yes it could probably use new tires, but not if you're going to ride it only on weekends
around your neighborhood. It would be worth it to keep the bike original. Ishiwata 024 tubing with lugs. Mt Zefal fenders which are period correct.
Asking $225, because of the originality factor, and above
average condition. If you want it for less then go buy something else. NO offers!! Yes that includes in person, so don't waste your time
if you're not going to bring the full amount. I would rather take it to Goodwill and get the tax deduction:-)

Ridiculous price. You can buy a much better mountain bike of that era, say one from Trek, Giant or Specialized, for $100 to $150.

Thanks. That's the kind of feedback I was seeking. I have a Peugot from that era that I am very happy with, except the chainstay mounted U-brake. I'd love to have one just like it with a rear canti-lever brake. Good bikes old mountain bikes with lugged steel frames rarely show up in my area. We see tons of big box cheapo junk from Walmart showing up used.

That is what I would target as well. A nice lugged steel frame rigid mountain bike, with canti brakes.

I have a 1992 Trek 950 myself. Great bike! Bought it for $75 off C/L but I had to do some clean up on it. 1993 was the last year for lugged frame, so newer ones are not lugged (its just a look, but I like the look). Heck, I just bought a 1995 Giant road bike, solely because it had a lugged steel frame. It will replace my modern aluminum frame Trek. Everything I have for me in the keeper fleet is lugged steel.

That's sharp looking! You certainly did do some cleanup.

Here's my $20 Craigslist purchase. I sunk money into the handlebars, saddle, rear rack, fenders and just added Suntour bar end shifters. All of these can be migrated to my dream touring bike in the future. The rims are really strong double-wall araya rims. The frame is a more relaxed geometry than most mountain bikes and seems to be quite suitable for touring. I have done tons of experimentation with this bike to learn what works with regard to fit for me. Its the most comfortable bike I have ever ridden.
