ok...it's about time for the NC State Fair....and, as usual, they usually have a few food items that are, well, weird, to say the least....

i've seen fried Oreo's, fried Reese's cups, fried Snickers, etc....i've even had a chocolate covered banana, which, btw, was one of my favorites...

found this on our local news web site (http://www.wral.com/news/state/blogpost/5708499/):

Currently in California the OC Super Fair is running (it's held for almost a month!) and a couple weeks ago the Fair folks out there put out a press release about their food. The deep fried pizza bites I could understand (in fact, I think I saw something like that at the Got to Be NC Festival.) But the Zucchini Weeni?

Yes, it's a hot dog, stuffed inside a zucchini, dipped in batter, and deep fried. And of course you can't have anything like this unless you serve it on a stick. If you're having some trouble envisioning that, Gina Trapani is here to help you out (http://www.flickr.com/photos/ginatrapani/3688179757/)

Care for something a little sweeter? Hey, there's chocolate-covered bacon. It's also frozen, if chocolately isn't enough for you. The pictures are a little nondescript, but here's a nice shot of the Chocolate Covered Bacon booth (http://www.flickr.com/photos/sonrisaelectrica/3758768221/). (I also liked the sign: "Ask me where to find the chocolate covered bacon!") If you want a preview of how this would taste, your local Fresh Market or Whole Food's may sell a product called Mo's Bacon Bar, which is also chocolate-covered bacon, only mostly chocolate and not frozen.

For pure-dee horrifying it might be tough to beat the Krispy Kreme chicken sandwich. Yes, a Krispy Kreme donut. With chicken in the middle. The one pictured in this news story (linky broke) has jelly in it. After that, a "pizza cone" sounds positively staid, and thefried meatball on a stick? It's almost normal.

so, what are some of the weird foods from YOUR local state fair??

Funnel cake. To me it looks like toilet bowl leavings after eating all that other weird carny food.

I get a Smoked Turkey Leg every year that I go.

I've had the fried snickers, oreo, heath bars. I tried the Emu burger. Eh, I could pass on them all, but the turkey leg is to die for.

OK.

Still fathoming.

Hot dog stuffed inside a zucchini and deepfried.

I like them each, one and separate - cooked and deepfried, but together it doesn't sound right .... who the hell thought up that combo, hehe!!!!!!!!!!

The only thing that could considered to be slightly weird is Dippin Dots. We don't have any of that fried stuff here just plain ol fair food.

We have dippin dots in the grocery store now. Weird. They aren't bad though. Haven't purchased them - from the grocery store - I'm still in the "if I'm out and the custard store is open - THAT'S where I'm headed".

Fried Coca-cola. I've never had it. I hear that it's a Coca-cola batter that's fried into a funnel cake. Too much for me!

I've gone to a few parties where the main meat was schmoked turkey - provided by a caterer - who had a big smoker that he pulled behind his truck and when he opened it up - JOISUS - 4 big monster birds in it - I asked him about them - and they raised them at their farm - special - good 50 lbs birds. And they tasted mighty special too!

Haha, I hate state fair food. I hate the state fair here in the first place, but I go because my wife loves it...

Anyway, all of the foods listed are not weird for here; heck, I bet they all started here.

I can't stand fair food. It's expensive and absolutely nasty. I eat before and after the fair, and maybe have a nice snack during the fair. I can have two gormet meals for the price people pay for a little food at the fair; and I wouldn't feel sick afterwards.

I don't get it. Glad some people do. :)

Saw battered green beans last weekend. That was a coffee shop/restaurant though, not a fair.

We've also tried deep fried pickles - I wasn't impressed.

Battered green beans are good. Also, battered asparagus.

Deep Fried Bacon. Saw it once at a county fair. You could just feel your arteries slamming shut.

that stuff is just gross.

i've had the best time at the fair when i went opening day, middle of the day....avoid the majority of the crowds, which i can't stand.

i tried a fried Reese's Cup last year and it was disgusting - had to throw it away. just freakin' ruined a very good peanut butter cup! :)

Well, Wolfie; since you mention my local OC "Super" Fair and I've spent about 8 full days there - I'll chime in.
I haven't tried or even seen the chocobacon, but kinda want to try it even at $5.
I've tried most of the other things and do like the
$9.50 turkey legs.
I did have a deep fried avocado meal. Half an avo stuffed with carne asada, battered lightly, fried and served with salsa on a bed of lettuce and some cilantro. It was tasty.
It's just not a fair without bad for you fried foods.

I consider cotton candy weird and I love the stuff. Even at the age of 35 I would happily devour an entire bag, turning the inside of my mouth blue. :D

Its fun to let it sit around for a while and turn into a hard ball of sugar when all the air leaves it.
