Foo - Did Microsoft actually get something right ?

Over the weekend I was hanging with my nephew and had brought my netbook with me to get a little tweaking as the XP had not run properly from the get go.

He said "screw this" and installed Win7 (Evaluation copy 7100).

Just gotta say... wow.

It's more like using a Mac... that can use 95% of the software out there.

The nephew said he was underwhelmed with the demo versions of Win 7 but has said this version has been rock solid in all his tests... he works in IT and runs his own consulting company as well.

He also said this OS really gives new life to older computers that struggle with XP and it's high resource demands.

I'm liking it.

I hate macs. Looks like a hybrid between vista and leopard.

Yes, Win7 is a winner and uses far less resources than Vista. Great news for Netbooks and older PCs still running XP

I've been using Win 7 beta for a few months and it's been working fine for me. Initially I liked it a lot, but nowadays the "just a polished version of Vista SP2" feeling is showing through. I use it in a VM on my Mac. I'm a Windows Administrator at the office, but at home I use a Mac. I also do a lot of stuff with .net so need Windows (not into Mono, though never tried, I heard it's pretty good).

I like Windows 7 a lot, but after using Mac, it still seems kinda sluggish. (I have 2GB dedicated to Win 7 VM + 2GB for OSX).

I installed Win7 on a cheapy machine at home just to tinker, and found that it runs very well. It seems to be very stable, which is nearly unheard of for an O/S from microsoft. It's still more of a pig than XP, but it's not the train wreck that Vista ended up being.

Thats good to here. Ive got a free upgrade to W7 coming in the fall. Im looking forward to it more and more as I see more good reviews.

Is the demo a free download and can you keep it and continue to get updates?

I don't understand why neither Mac nor Windows offers alternative desktops, file system interfaces, GUI widgets, etc. so the advanced user can tailor his computer to his specific preferences. Maintaining brand unity perhaps?

brand unity and easier upgrades. All those changes could be incompatible with the next O/S and then they would lose future sales.

What, and have Micosoft loose out on some extra money? I highly doubt it.

I've got right at a year now on my Vista laptop and desktop. Both are still running nice and fast.

Yeah, but it's Mac OS X (gross).

OTOH, it costs me nothing to do an aptitude dist-upgrade. :innocent:
