I was wandering if there is an easy way of knowing how long your chain should be...

do i put it on both biggest rings and look to have no give at all or is there another way of working it out?

I have a brand new XTR (CN-7701) chain with 114 links and I have an 18.5 Marin frame, a 9 speed XT rear casette and a 175mm FSA Crankset.

any help would be great, thanks !!

use the old chain to get a link count.

Wrap chain around the big chain ring and largest sprocket in back,dont go thru rear derailer, put ends of chain together and add one link.

The park tools repair website shows you several methods which should all give similar results.

Thats' the method I always use.

I was told to put the chain around the biggest chainring and the biggest sprocket in the back, without going through the derailer. Pull it taut and then add two links. (remembering that one link = two pieces of chain.)
