Hello everyone, I have a question about a noise my 520 is making, and I'm wondering if anyone has come across a problem like this.

The Trek is only about a month old, everything is stock and it has only 410 miles on it. Everything was great, then I took it out on Friday for a 60 mile ride. I got rained on for the first time with the bike but It has fenders, so not too much road grime could get into the mix. It ran fine, no noises at all. I then got home, dried it off best I could then left town for the weekend. When I got back on Monday I took it out for a spin. This time however when I rode it I could hear a weird liitle noise coming from the rear of the bike. It's like somthing is clicking or hitting on something. It sounds less like a click though... hard to explain, I know. It also does it whether I am pedaling or coasting. Well I took off my rack, fenders, water bottles, seat bag, pump and everything that i could to try and start narrowing it down. The sound was still there! Now it's not a regular sound that you can time, it's rather random but it does occur almost continuosly. It sounds worse (as in more often, not louder) when I am sitting on the bike, but still does occur when I am standing. However when I get off the bike and spin the tires I don't hear it, it only occurs when I am on the bike, I guess the weight is contributing to it somehow? All of the tires are on tight though and nothing appears to wobble in the axles. In traffic rides I can't hear the nosie to bad, but I do intend on taking her on a 6 day camping tour in 2 weeks and when there is nothing around but me and nature, the sound does get rather irritating. Any insight with the little gremlin in my bike before I break down and take it to the shop?
Thanks for any input.

Hi,
a bike needs a mini-tuneup a few weeks after you buy it. Might be a spoke lossening up. A mechanic should go over it, checking so see everyting is ok; and most shops don't charge to do it.

Yeah, I took it in for the first major tuneup last week. I didn't think about the spokes though, I think he only adjusted the cables and derailers, I'll have to check the spoke think out, thanks

It shouldn't happen on a new bike, however, sometimes the BB 'clicks' because it is either loose, or the threads are very slightly worn. If this is the problem it is easily fixed by winding a couple layers of plumbers tape (teflon) around the BB's thread and reinstalling to the correct pressure.

It does sound similar to my experience but in the front. At first I thought it was the reflector but it turned out to be a loose spoke(s). Place I bought it was far from here, and they checked it before they shipped it home to me. Still did the same, I ended up tensioning all the spokes equally, and haven't had a problem since. Knock on wood. It sounds similar especially in the similarity that it does it more when you are on the bike and the wheel is "loaded".

Hey everybody, thanks alot for the input. I checked the spokes and 5 of them on the rear wheel were extremely loose, must be the new factor I guess, but I tightened them, checked the trueness and took her for a spin this morning. and NO MORE NOISE!!! I'm really glad it was that simple. Thanks again!

If they loosen up again, tell the LBS you bought the bike from that you want a correctly built wheel in exchange for the one that you currently have. If it is built right, and properly trued and checked when the bike is assembled at the shop, the spokes shouldn't do that.

Cool, I'll keep that in mind. This is my first quality bike, so I just assumed those things might happen with time... at least they did with my old $100 Walmart bikes from back in the day
