General Cycling Discussion - Calling all Tour de Donut riders...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Just wondering if there were any of you going to the Tour de Donut race this coming Saturday July 10th in Staunton Illinois. It will be my first time to ride it but believe it will be great fun. If they run the same 30 mile route as in the past years you ride about 13 miles then stop and eat as many glazed donuts as you can, then ride 9 miles and stop and chow down again then ride the final 8 miles back to town. For each donut eaten they deduct 5 minutes off your total time. They have mens and womens classes and a mens over 50 class and had about 525 riders last year I was told. Hope to see some of you there. I'll be on the old orange & yellow Schwinn Continental, probably near the end of the pack (or along the side of the road getting sick!).

Dang it! Every year I forget about it.
I'll ask if anyone in my spinning class is going, and if so, I'll be hitching a ride to get there. It sounds like great fun.

Don't know if know this or not Koffee but there is no registration at the event. It's probably closed by now but you might go to their website and call one of the organizers to check.

Donuts donated by a local donut shop and the water is donated I think from a local grocery store. Registration is closed right now because this was the first year they tried pre-registration only. I heard a few years ago a couple guys at 32 donuts each! They give away door prizes and a new mens and womens hybrid bike. If you do a Google search for Tour de Donut there's some sites there of past years that are interesting.
Oh well. No biggie. I talked to my class, and no one was going, but they were very interested in training for such an event. Next week we'll be eating Krispy Kremes in class! ;)
If you could advertise the Tour de Donut like in early May that would be great. Then we can all get a chance to register and maybe even get a bikeforums group down there.
Thanks anyways.

That sounds good to me. I'll be sure and mention it again next year KB.
Yeah, please do. Early May would be real nice so we would get enough time to register.
Thanks again!

koffee try to stay up late this sat night and do the l.a.t.e ride at buckingham fountain , im coming up to do it . i love to ride the night rides .to me 10,000 bicyclist whizzing along at 1 in the morning is great fun . plus i love to check out all the different bikes laying around before hand .u get to see a great variety. cheers hope to see ya there
Oh, that won't work for me, but thanks for the invite. I've done those rides before (not the LATE ride, but rides in other states and countries), and I think there are too many people who don't know how to ride closely, and I end up spending all my time braking to avoid someone who's clearly not used to riding with large groups.
Have fun with it though, and if you take pics, post!

Darn it! I didn't know they were preregistering.
Apparently the Tour de Donut is now sponsered by Boeing bicycle club (I work there, but I'm not a member of the club). Here's a link: http://www.bebikeclub.com/
I don't know if you can get the site, might be inside firewall, but basically it says registration is now closed, they already have 500+ riders.
I would kinda like to know why a person couldn't just show up.
Dang it. I forgot about it this year. I'm only about 30 mins away, but I already have plans for tomorrow.

Didn't see this post until too late. Rode the donut today. It was a good ride. Hot, humid, and a little longer than last year. Somewhat over 600 riders registered. Sorry I didn't know to connect with other bikeforums folk.
Seriously, next year, we should make a plan to go and have a meeting point someplace preplanned or hook up after the ride. If we all register at the same time, we all might get the same start times too.
Let us know how you did, how it was, etc. when you get a free few minutes.

Couldn't get back to the forum until today but had a great time at the Donut race. This was my first year and I was impressed with the route and the turn out. My computer said it was 31 miles and I heard them say there were 630 people registered but I'm not sure how many where there. A lot though. Won't know until about a week from now how I placed but it doesn't matter, it was just fun riding in it. I was able to get a total of 10 donuts ate to take 50 minutes off my time. I heard that the quickest man under 50 ran it in 1:15 plus he ate 6 donuts so adjusted time would be 45 minutes! The guy that ate the most donuts ate 20 and a skinny girl at 15! They drew for a new Trek 7200 mens and womens hybrid bikes as well. Plenty of free water, soda and left over donuts! Yuck!!! They're not on my diet for a little while!
I think a good time was had by all and I look forward to doing it again next year. I'll try and announce it early enough for some of you to get registered and we might be able to meet up there. Hope you all have a great day today.

What kind of donuts were they? If they were powdered, I will just learn to peddle real hard. If they were Krispy Kremes or Dunkin Donuts, I'm all over it! :)

The donuts were local, from Jubelt's Bakery of Mount Olive, IL.
I have much I could say about the tour, but Roger Kramer's Site (http://www.rogerkramercycling.org/HTML/Donut.htm) does it much better. Be sure to check out the newspaper articles he links.
Ok, so are they powdered or glazed or what? Seriously, I hate those powdered ones! Oooooh, or are they like long johns? I love long johns! :)

Glazed, like Duncan Donuts, only better.
That's the dealbreaker! I'm there next year! I'm leaving it up to you guys to remember us poor, donut lovin, homer wannabees for next year and remind us early enough in the year so we can register!
Yay, glazed! :)

Preliminary Tour de Donut results can be found here (http://www.bebikeclub.com). The winner in actual time finished 30 miles in 01:18:41 and ate 6 donuts. I finished in 102nd place at 01:49:23 and ate 1 donut. It looks like the donut-adjusted winning time was either 00:23:50 or 00:24:04, with the winner riding the route in around two hours and eating 20 donuts. No negative race times this year, probably because it was hot and humid. I can't imagine how someone could eat more than a couple donuts and keep riding when the temperature is around 95 degrees.

Well you were a lot quicker than me Tom. In the Under 50 class I had a 2:20:13 actual time for 137th place out of 231 entries but I ate 10 donuts that adjusted my time to 1:30:13 and 51st place. That don't sound too bad but my overall actual time of all categories placed me in 244th out of 479. What can I say? I'm middle aged and need more time in the saddle. I'll do better next year for sure. It was a great day and I encourage everyone to try and enter next year.
