Hey guys this is my first post in the CX forum. I just recently picked up an old 27" road bike and I was looking for some good tires to put on it so I could ride a local gravel trail.

I tried riding it with the tradtional road bike tires and I was having a lot of spin outs.

Also, the tires that came with it are 27"x1 1/8" do the tires I replace it with need to be the same width or can I move up a little in width?

these are a little wider, 1 and 3/8, but if you have the clearance they should do the trick.

It would cost you a bit more, but you might consider putting 700c wheels on that bike. You'll have more tire options and room for fat tires and fenders. The cost (besides new wheels) is a set of long-reach brakes. Last I looked the vintage and neo/vintage places like Rivendell and Velo-Orange had these, but you might be able to find them on jensonusa.com or universalcycles.com now.

Caloso brings up a good option if it is a bike you plan to stick with, and has calliper, not cantilever, brakes. You may even have enough adjustment on your current calipers (you only need to be able to drop the pads down 4mm to readh a 700c [erto 622] rim). My old Bridgstone road bike was originally 27", upgrade to 700c was simple, new wheels and tires, adjust the brakes.

Personally, I would only go to the expense of new wheels if I knew it was a bike i was going to keep, although you may be able to score a deal on some used hoops.
