With Shimano components, if I were to go from an 8 speed setup to a 10 speed setup, do I have to replace the crankset? I've read that the chainring spacing needs to be narrower so the narrower chain doesn't fall between the chainrings. I've also read that this is a marketing scheme and has little influence in real life. What to believe?
I don't know if this will help, but I was just running a SR Suntour 7 speed crank on a 9 speed otherwise full XT hybrid without any issues. Have heard that in practice the crankset is forgiving of changing chain widths.
