Foo - I think I was undercharged

I know this is a weird thing to say, but I think my LBS undercharged me for labor on a repair for my bike. I cracked my right shifter on my Rival and needed it replaced. The part was very appropriately priced (the same as if I had bought it myself on the interwebs-but I only paid for one, instead of the set), but he only charged me $25 labor. I did not complain, but how can a shop stay open, charging that little?

Obviously I will keep using him (I actually bought a new pair of gloves which I could have gotten cheaper at Performance), especially since he was fast and does good work. Can any wrenches comment?

Maybe he had a good margin on the shifter sale.

Unless it is impossible to find wholesale on the internet, the charge was 50% of the best price I could find (since I could only find them in sets)

What is his hourly labor rate and how long did the repair take him? If you really have a problem with the price, go back and put whatever you feel the difference from what you were charged and what you think a fair price is in his tip jar.

Most shops charge around $60/hr.

That works out to about a buck a minute. For a job that takes about 25 minutes = $25.

Sounds like a fair deal...

Some shops charge a set rate while others will charge you for the actual time... a good mech can do stuff in a fraction of the time a new mech can.

If that's what he charged you and he did good work and you're happy he's doing something right, you bought gloves there and you'll probably end up going back there for stuff and telling your cycling buddies about the place. Win/win.

Not true, I have a 10" crescent wrench that is quite adept at expressing varying degrees of displeasure, and it's for this very reason I keep it next to the driver's seat in my van.
