I just purchased a 1987 21inch Step Through Schwinn World Sport for my wife. We'd like to start touring and I figured the step though would be easier for her to mount and dismount.

The catalog indicates it has 4130 chrome-moly double butted main tubes. Centeny dropouts with eyelets and stainless steel faces.

Is the frame adequate for touring? And what are Centeny dropouts with eyelets and stainless steel faces?

The frame should be fine for touring, the larger issue will be the fit of the frame and the gearing you use on the bike. Centeny I believe refers to the manufacturer of the dropouts much like Shimano and Campagnolo make there own dropouts. The only difference this could make is the threading and because it's a Schwinn I'm sure you have english threads so just file that away under useless facts or bar trivia. What will make a difference is the rear spacing from dropout to dropout. MTB spacing is 135mm while road bike stuff is 130mm and that could effect what kind of hubs you can put on the bike. Though spreading the frame that 5mm is no problem should you need to. People use both road and MTB wheels for touring and you just want to make sure you have room for fenders while not a deal breaker are very nice for keeping your stuff and your wife clean.

Oh, The eyelets are for attaching fenders and or racks.
