Advocacy & Safety - I Hate Cyclists

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

A friend of mine e-mailed this gem of an article to me. The article itself is typical from car people. However, what I find unnerving is some of the comments afterwards. I hope some of these people are not as bold as they are on the road as they are on the internet.
So what does everyone think. Most of these people who are flaming on theses threads are in some ways just the other side of the coin when we flame on car people. As one blogger put it, neither car drivers or cyclist understand each others worlds. What do you think?

A sneak peek of a few favorite quotes:
"i completly agree, those people should all be dragged off their bikes and shot, they say they have the right to the road....well so do i, and if my car road space happens to ("accidently" of coarse) cross in to their cyclist space, well that will be their problem wont it?.these scumbags will get whats coming to them. PS-TO ANY CYCLISTS -YOU WILL GET YOURS!, ITS AWFUL HARD TO CYCLE WHEN YOUR ARMS HAVE BEEN CUT OFF..."
"HaHa, this is great. I'm revelling in all this cycle-hate. I loathe the ****ers. They're pests to drivers, pests to pedestrians, pests with their awkward, dirty bikes on the train at peak hour and generally just ****ing pests. What's really grating is the imperious attitude that goes with it. All cyclists are sickening narcissists in their pervy lycra no-jocks playsuits. I live for the day I see one go under a semi. I'll dance in their guts."
"Cyclists should be banned from the streets of London ..FOR THEIR OWN SAFETY..majority of them do not wear any kind of hi visibility clothing, helmets also most of them cycling during dark hours do not have any flashing lights and the worst of all they ride next to each other chatting without looking over their shoulders..
Most of them are cocky, uneducated, chip on the shoulder idiots.
As a bus driver i wish during the rush hours cyclist should not be allowed in the streets of London.
One reminder, London is not Amsterdam or Cambridge, there are 8200 busses driven by 24000 drivers ,carrying 6.3 million passengers a day which is the highest number anywhere in Europe also higher than New York..during the rush hours driving a bus even without idiots on two wheels is stressfull let alone with them..
We are very shortly starting a campaign in London against cyclists during the rush hours occupying bus lanes in tens at a time and cost London economy millions everyday by at least delaying commuters getting to work, wasted fuel and alike.
Sooner that they are removed during rush hours the better..they are as bad as articulated busses in Londons narrow streets.

What do you think? Whats the best way to combat this sort of thing? More open hostility, an open mind, carry a gun, wear body armor, foul language?

For what it's worth, drivers are just as aggressive towards pedestrians, public transport, and even other drivers; as they are to cyclists.
I get aggressive when I drive too, so I avoid it as much as possible.
Besides...

This bit is pure gold:
Get a clue woman. I'm sure YOU don't obey all traffic laws when you drive. Always wear that seat belt? NEVER, EVER speed? Ever hear of turn signals? I figure you've broken a few at one time or another. Ever thrown trash out the window? I'm betting you have.
As far as being gay, you're right! I'm VERY happy and gay when I'm riding! :P I'm going to assume that you know what the original meaning of gay is. If not, look it up if you can figure out how to use a dictionary.
As far as to WHY some cyclists run stop signs, those are designed for auto speeds. At the speed I'm at I can look over an intersection several times before I get to it.
Go ahead and put something in my spokes. Ever been kicked in the face w/ a hard sole shoe w/ a metal cleat and have a bike pump shoved up your ass?
First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, then you win.
I'm guessing we're transitioning from 'ridicule' to 'fight' - won't be long, now...

I read and hear 'hate bicycles' stuff all the time, and I take it as it should be taken, whining extremists happy to hear themselves talk, much like anti-car luddites and mazzholes do. There is as much to hate about how some cyclists ride---curb jumping, filtering, sidewalk riding, smashing pedestrians in crosswalks, blowing thru redlights, unseemly groups and 'pelotons' riding 4,5,6 abreast and stretched out over the equivalent of several city blocks---as there is to hate about cars. And so what if they hate bikes just on principle? I hate buses, just on principle.
Ghandi was a moron, so I never quote him.

"A long time ago, my brother and I were driving along a road when we had to slow down behind a cyclist, who was riding in the middle of the road. There was constant oncoming traffic, so my brother slowed it down and started messing with the cassette whilst he had the chance.
When we got to a lay-by, he beeped his horn to get the guy to pull over and let us pass, but he didn't. 3 lay-bys went by and the guy was getting more militant. So, we decided that might is right, pulled out into a small gap in the traffic (too cmall to actually overtake) got alongside the cyclist and he was forced to move over as the truck came back into the lane. We then waved on the queue of cars behind us and passed the red faced cyclist, the cars behind had got the idea and bunched together so he could not move back to the middle of the road.
That may be dangerous, but it served him right for being such an inconsiderate prick."
So he nearly had a head-on collision with oncoming traffic, then moved over into the cyclist (he's terrible at telling stories, so I'm not perfectly clear on this) because the cyclist was being a prick? Lol.

Seemingly it might be getting dangerous to bike anymore. But I guess you could view all their words in the same way I've seen some pidgeons and grackles in my lawn act when protecting thier territorry. They puff up their feathers so they look really big and act really tough. But I guess if you have more of a brain then a bird does you can figure out it's all just a show and they're like harmless kittens.
But it was a good read gave me a heck of a laugh to see people bicker like that. =P

Any valid points are lost in his inability to properly communicate them in a a productive way. What I am left with is the sense of entitlement that is common amongst road rage motorists brought on by the inability to deal with other legal forms of transportation on a shared roadway.
There was a link to a rebuttal in the comments that is pretty good.

The citizens that live in, and around, London should learn how to ride a bike. Instead of thinking, a car is the only way to get around.

Actually, I found London to be among the safest places I've ever cycled, and my first experience of riding in London was in the rain immediately after a 26-hour flight with a full touring load. This article is just another demonstration of how "brave" people can be behind a keyboard. Seen it before, I'll see it again. When they get out of their cars and say it to my face, I might take it seriously. Until then, just treat it the way it's intended -- light entertainment.

That being the case, the number of drivers is still superfluous. I'm not concerned with those NOT driving. Besides, if they honestly think that the beign of traffic in ANY major city, let alone London, are people on bicycles... all credibility for their argument seems lost.

I had a six month assignment at the 'Navy Station' in London...nowhere near the water, smack in the middle of mayfair...and I loved being carless and careless! I was on contract so I worked when I wanted (and didn't), so I used to take bus in from near Wimbledon in the middle of the day, when the traffic was less and buses less crowded. It was like a tour of the city before and after work...loved it. I bicycled alot south of the city, into the hills...or along the Thames toward heathrow but still nice.
Why would ANYONE want a car in the city? You are missin' the whole point of being in the city!

Why would you rotate a bus driver? Doesn't the driver need to face forward?
