Road Cycling - us non-athletes

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Look at slide #8 and #9
Sad! Some people will never get it. :(
Heck look at slide #1 Fox be it FoxNews, FoxSports, or FoxToilet Paper has little use to me.
Hmm.. tennis isn't a sport either then. By that definition, neither is baseball, basketball, football... good job FOX!

This is the correct answer. Faux anything is pure garbage.

The line that will anger the world:
Lance Armstrong is not an athlete.
While I am absolutely certain that Lance Armstrong is the best conditioned and may have the strong will of any person in the world, I don't consider riding a bike athletic.
And according to dictionary.com:
athlete:
A person possessing the natural or acquired traits, such as strength, agility, and endurance, that are necessary for physical exercise or sports, especially those performed in competitive contexts.
athletic:
Characterized by or involving physical activity or exertion
Physically strong and well-developed; muscular

According to this photo gallery the only sports are basketball and hockey....okkkkaayyyy. They can't say baseball, they nixed softball which is the same thing except underhand pitching. Are they saying golfers are or aren't? This is why cycling will never be mainstream. Too many americans think a 'sport' is only something that americans invented in the past century, pay people bazillions of dollars to play, and involves skills that are way too complex for us mere mortals to try to learn or use, such as throwing a ball up and bouncing it off the floor. I don't follow 'mainstream' sports, i.e. baseball, basketball, football. I pride myself on it too. My sport is also one where I participate in it many hours a week and push myself. I'm loving it right now with the olympics right now. I am actually reading the sports page because it has stories on the atheletes, trials, competitions leading up to the olympics, etc. That's my rant.

Another set of folks who took the bait. Why not complete the entire episode by writing a nasty note to the author, setting him straight?
Except, that is exactly what they want. There used to be a radio talk show host in Denver years ago that, when things got slow, would say things that made people mad - mad enough to call the show and mad enough to call their friends to tune in and call. Guy had darn good ratings, too!

What I intersting is that FoxSports doesnt consider bicycling a sport but ESPN has Lance Armstrong in the top 5 best athletes EVER! now lets look at the 2 companys...one is a HUGE and dominated the sports market and the other is a little obsure channel that I only watch when they have a baseball on and there is nothing else on the TV....thats one point you can consider
They're just stirring the pot some. Meh, let them talk, what's it matter?

don't know if any of you are simpsons fans. but there was a halloween episode a few years back where the ads came to life and started attacking the town. well, our fine springfieldians quickly realized if you don't pay attention to them, they die. "journalists" like this are, simply put, the lard lad (the big boy-like character in the aforementioned simpsons show). ignore them and they die. they're just fishing to hack off a bunch of us spandex-clad nancy men. don't give them the satisfaction, eh?

I've read it's a joke, but how do you know? What is giving it away? I saw this same link in another thread but I still don't see how this isn't this guy's honest opinion.
I said this in one of the forums some time ago, but to paraphrase myself: Why should I or anyone else care what someone considers a sport. If people compete at it and want to call it a sport, then good for them. If people want to consider chess a sport, more power to them. ESPN televises the spelling bee, for goodness sake. We also see fishing and poker on the sports channels. Great! I can always watch something else, or go play one of the sports, which is my preference.
