I’ve always been intrigued by small-wheeled bikes. I have a modded Dahon Boardwalk and was pleasantly surprised at how well the 20” wheeler handled. I learned about minivelo through the internet and have always wanted one, but I don’t have the money. So I turn to building my own cheapo version.

I started off with a cheap kid’s mountain bike. I stripped the bike right down to its frame and stripped its decals. I replaced the heavy steel wheelset with an alloy set. I did not plan to build a coaster bike, but the new wheels prompted me to change my mind. The cog that came with the coaster hub was an 18t, much too low a gearing for a 20” bike, so I ordered a 12t KORE BMX one from Ebay. I kept the original gum-wall tires because they look good with the build.

I was questioning whether to replace the cranks or not, but decided that it was worth it to spill the extra cash. I got all the drivetrain parts I needed from CL, various bikes stores, and co-ops. The toughest challenge was installing the bb adapter, but with help from my trusty dad, it all worked out.

The saddle to handlebar drop was a major concern because the seatpost has to extend so far out. To ease the problem, I decided used the original stem that came with the bike because it has a decent amount of rise. The geometry is still a little aggressive for an everyday cruiser, but I am not complaining. I contemplated what bars to use and was set on buying a set of moustache bars, when I found these cruiser bars for less than half the price of the moustache. I chopped up the cruiser bar to create a Noah’s arc bar look. The tape is a DIY job by cutting up a yellow cotton tee into strips and smothering them with coats of shellac. I have to say they turned out rather well.

Future upgrades include: a frame pump, a bell, better tires, a Brooks maybe?

What a nice lookin DIY bike! Great job with the looks and keepin the costs down. It is always fun to get rid of parts and make your own bike. I hope I can build a minivelo one day.

fixed?

I had one of those arc-type handlebars before, but i changed it to a normal bmx handlebar to bring it up to the level of the seat.

fixed?

It has a coaster brake right now, which, I know, is not the safest way to go. I hope to go fixed one day, when I get the money.

I also scrounged up a pair of fenders from my Dahon, so I'm going to throw them on as well. It's gonna look BOMB! Stay tuned for more updates.

Where on earth did you get that front hub? I have never seen one like it. Is it anodized to that orange color?

Since you began with a kid's mtn bike, are there any concerns about weight limits on the frame and components?

To be honest, it came from a cheap next turbo bmx bike exactly like this one.

I've also seen ones with yellow and blue hubs. They're not anodized for sure, probably paint or something like that.

I'm not uber heavy (sub 140) and the frame is made of hi-tensile steel, so I'm not too worried.

Kinda makes me wish I'd kept my son's GT BMX mini...

I'm curious about that top tube protector. I need one for my Dahon project. Is that electrical tape on the ends?

It's not regular electrical tape. It's something called Linerless Electrical Rubber Splicing Tape or Self Amalgamating Tape. you can get them at home depot or most hardware store.

I referred this idea in one of my previous posts. Taking my children's 20 inch mountain bicycle and make a similar conversion, but what sort of father would steal his 7 years old son bicycle to play around? And what will I do within a year when his little sister will be 6 years old and she wants a bigger bicycle? "Bad father", I thought, so I thought a full suspension 20 inch children's mountain bicycle would give me more possibilities. First of all the full suspension 20 inch mountain bicycle is a bit bigger. Second I can replace the rear shock by a bit of pipe and even change the geometry of the headset and seat post and rise by some millimeters the bottom bracket !:D
