Living Car Free - Going car free

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Ok....So I have been a bike commuter off and on for the past few years and I have around 700 miles so far this year.
I turn 40 on Saturday and have been thinking about what I can change in my life that may impact my next 20 years.
So I have gave it some thought and decided to live car free for a year. I really am to the point where I hate driving, everything seems more simple when riding a bike. You can choose your own path, make your own repairs and just live more of a simple life.
The wife and kids still have cars so I don't expect to have any excuses for not riding everywhere I go.
I just thought i would post this and say I'm looking forward to joining an elite crowd like all of you.

Welcome to the Super Elite Side...:)
I don't know how elite the club is, but sounds like a great experiment. It should also set a shining example for other members of the family. They might like to get in on the act. I've been doing something similar to what you are starting -- our family has a car, but I do all my personal travel by bike ( or bus).
You'll probably have to bend a little if your wife wants you both to see a film at a theatre that's > 5 miles away., for example.
Although perhaps you can convince her that it's a bikeable distance :)

Welcome to the Elite side:D We have cookies!
First of all Happy Birthday, mine is Tuesday will be 57 this year. I think you are right on track with how much simpler things are on a bike. I only drive to work two days a week and then I ride my motorcyle. The only reason I take the motorbike those days is I swim at lunch and the pool is too far from my office to make it there and back in a resonable amount of time on my bicycle. Good luck with being car free and enjoy the ride.

Do it! I hate driving and so only do it when I have to. I hope to be in a position to go car free soon!
GL!
I think that this is a really cool choice you're making. I bike everywhere, but only because I don't own a car and therefore have no choice. I enjoy this lifestyle for the most part, though it does get pretty hot sometimes...or rainy. I suppose it's all just building me loads of great character that will come in handy later on.
Best of luck and be safe!

Sine you will be riding a bike so much from now on you may want to start thinking about the next 50 years of your life! Then again I am an optimist!
