I saw the part duex thread but didn't see anything for 2009. I hope I'm not too early, anyways, checking in to see if anyone is doing this ride? I registered earlier this summer and realize the central park duathlon is the previous week on labor day weekend! I did that last year and may need to opt for the October race instead. So for the NYC Century (it'll be my first one), who's riding it? I think I've read that it isn't a closed off race/tour meaning we'll be riding with vehicular traffic. Anyways, look forward to the ride and am excited! So who else is doing it?
I'll be marshaling
It's more riding in smaller groups with traffic as opposed to the teeming masses of the Five Boro, which swarms through entire roads every spring. I much prefer the Century ride.

I'm marshaling as well.
I also much prefer the century, but I'd much, much prefer it if it were marked better through Queens and the Bronx.

I'll probably send in my registration this weekend. Will probably do the 75 mile route again.

Marshalling too.
Seems like more marshals than riders :)

oh cool wow! it will be my first time on century...i will be riding the 75 miles. i did the 5 boro once, and thought it was lots of fun. they dont close off streets like 5 boro? before or never did?? i didnt want to have to worry about the cars...but?
cc_rider

Streets stay open to cars, but it's not bad. Fewer riders and staggered starts means you're riding with a relatively small number of bikes at any time.
Part of it is on trails or in parks, most of the rest is low traffic streets. The "busiest" roads are the first leg in Manhattan, and those will be mostly deserted if you start early.
Out of curiosity, are you an architect? How's business up there?

You might want to carry 2 spare tubes and a hand pump.
There are marshals to help with flats, etc, but if you don't have a spare tube they can't really help.
It's a fun ride.
Enjoy!

thanks...i guess if i carry that stuff,i would have to bring a backpack...
most marshals should have a pump etc. But yes, bring a tube for your bike.
I think one tube is sufficient; you're in NYC, after all..... If you flat and use your spare tube, stop at the next bike shop (ask people riding around you, someone will know where one is) and buy a new tube just in case you flat again. You should always have one spare tube in any case.
the only time I bring two tubes on a ride is if I am gonna be out in the sticks somewhere.
similarly you don't need to carry gallons of liquids - just peel off and buy some water or Gatorade from a street vendor, or have someone you know/trust watch your bike while you run into a store. Same with food (There are also rest stops with food.water of course).

any BF people wanna meet up in the AM, pls let me know.:)

Has anyone got their packets yet? We are about 2 weeks out and haven't received anything. I am riding with my group and haven't figured out when/where we are meeting. Should be a nice ride can't wait to actually get out there and start going.
I'm not sure if I'll be marshalling or riding... And how many miles... Might do the 75 or the 100. Still deciding...

If you are marshaling, you should be doing the marshal ride this Sunday.
The 100 milers meet at Prospect Park at 8:15.

Are we supposed to pick up our packets somewhere? I got something in the mail today to what looks like a bib number, just no number on it. It does say NY Century on it and has a tear off at the bottom for a tshirt @ finish. Am I supposed to pick up a packet with an actual bib number on it?
I plan to do the 75 mile ride.

i highly doubt it, this isn't a race...

If memory serves, there's a check in point near the start where they hand out freebees like patch kits and NYC cycling maps. Other than that, what you got in the mail is pretty much all you need.
At the end there's usually food, t-shirts and free water bottles.

Since you got your packet, the only thing you'll need to pick up is the cue sheets. Bring something big to carry it in.:D

Not much food at the end. Mostly just a cookie. But at least there are food vendors and restaurants not far away. I usually end up leaving most of the stuff they give you at the end, too hard to carry the last few miles back.
Best to take advantage of the food at the rest stops, carry some of your own or stop along the way. Last year the Astoria stop was out of the better stuff by the time I got there. I'm glad I got enough at Kissena.

oh wow! all this talk is making more excited! :P actually i would like to meet up with somebody whos doing the 75 miles...but im still deciding if i should do the 100...since its my first time i dont want to kill myself over something im not experienced about....they said for 100 miles (only experienced) i know its not a race but if somebody who is a casual rider, not a speed demon, i'd love to meet up! either 75 or 100? am i getting too worried over this?
i signed up after the 21st so i'll have to go 30 mins before start to pick up my stuff...

I must be thinking of the Tour de Bronx where there was free pizza at the end.

it wasn't much of a packet to be honest. It was more like an envelope with a pamphlet and a NY Century bib with no number. Is that it? I guess I'm use to race bibs with numbers on it. So I guess that's the packet huh?

The BNY5B has numbers on the bibs and helmets so they can sell you photos.

So I'm guessing the century is just that single bib ny century image? Guess I'll just side mount it on one side of the back of my jersey.
I'm signed on for 55 but want to do 75 - we may meet up super early at the park (6 amish) - feel free to PM me if you want o start a list and hammer out a spot to meet.:thumb:

I'm in for the meet, will be riding with my team (registered for MS under Team Horsey). I'll send a mail out to see if they want to meet up for an early AM pre-ride. We'll probably meet early anyways for gear checks and all. Hope the weather holds good, could use a nice brisk morning into mid-day warmth. I think we're going for the 75-100 depending on our pace.

There is a small park one block north of the start, Malcolm X and 111th. About a dozen of us BF"s met up there three years ago at the ride start. Good location and easy to find.
There was a meet up there two years ago, but I was still stuck in line when the first ride group rolled out.
Could arrange to meet at the same park, but maybe start at 6:10 or 6:15 instead of 6:00 so people picking up there packets and cues can join up. Maybe regroup at Prospect Park.

Get there early. A lot of people like to try to start at 6:00.
Three years ago the tables opened at 5:30
Two years ago the packet pickup didn't open until 5:45 (so I missed the first start), although the cue pickup tables opened a bit earlier.
Don't know about last year. I was late and got there just after 6:00.
One slight difficulty with a meet up is after the cue pickup they funnel the cyclists together behind the start line and send them out in groups of about 200. You'll have to pick up the cue sheets, then take you bike to the edge and lift it over the rope. I did it that way three years ago. If you get there too late to get a good spot in line, you'll still be waiting to pick up your cue when the start happens.
If people want an early start, one option is to meet up earlier, before 5:30, and go to the cue line together.
Seems to be a lot of us planning on doing the 75 mile ride.
Is anyone planning to do the full 100?

I'll be in a cavalo top with PI arm warmers - felt f3sl xlab setup riding with a few peeps if you all see and want to join. We're going to try to keep a strict pace since this is pretty much a "TOUR" and not a race. The obvious stop and take pictures here and there will happen for sure!
I'm slow and also marshaling, so I'll probably need to stop on occasion to help people with flats or whatever; but it'd be nice to say hello at the start and at Prospect Park, as suggested. I'll probably be on an old mtb with a lot of stickers.

Just noticed that this year's route is different than the route of the last couple of years. Second stop moved from Canarsie Pier to Marine Park, and ride goes out to Rockaway this time.
Something new to see.:thumb:
