Training & Nutrition - Training a different type of endurance

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

So I used to swim, and loved the 1, 2, 4, 8 or 16-minute endurance that you get from the sport. After cycling for 4 months I feel I"ve lost that skill and when I'm on the XC trails I'm weak when going fast for those lengths. On the other hand, when I used to swim I couldn't hold up a cycling run for more than 30 min without dying.
How do you train both the ability to keep your heart rate high for a short while and be able to cycle 2-3 solid hours?
.
Swim once or twice a week. Or do sprints on the bike.
I miss the effect swimming had on my aerobic capacity; but
I never did like laps, or pools.

One ride a week is for sprints one for hill repeats or intervels and a fun ride in there plus a three hour ride on the weekend and you are set to rock and roll.
