Northeast - Interesting Bikes on my Central Park Ride!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Wow, last Saturday and today were the best riding days this summer... basically a very big hint of what Fall may bring. I'd swear all the new paving on the East Drive got me .3-.4 better average speed.

Saw 2 VERY interesting and odd bikes... which may be old hat to some/many, but were new to me. One was a recumbent... which is not that unusual. BUT this one had a fairly thick top tube that ran to a point half a foot in front of and 4-6 inch ABOVE the front wheel. And there lay the crank and pedals! Essentially, his feet were higher than his heart. Not sure, but I could swear I've seen the exact same bike last weekend. Could this be a custom one-of?

The other was way interesting. It was a tandem... BUT the rear rider had a "regular" sized wheel because the front rider... was recumbent! Front tire was a small, BMX style wheel, halfway in width between a MTB tire and a hybrid tire...

Nope, that's a typical high racer recumbent. Look around here:

That would be one of these:

One of the things that I love about NYC is the vast assortment of bikes you see, from the old battered takeout delivery to the wildest fixie. Someone could put together a collection of photos "Bikes of NYC"
and sell it at Barnes and Noble, I'll require 1% :)

Been thinking about that... already have some shots, so ya could say I started before you mention it<g>!

Another odd one is a guy peddling very slowly on the Greenway... with ape hangers that actually are very close to his chin with 2 huge mirrors on 'em.

I'll buy a copy. Even the scraps of a frame locked to a post has a story to tell.

You guys know that lady in prospect that rides that creaking bike with fenders, bags, water bottles in the back and front? She usually wears a hat and a yellow skirt or something like that. She goes real slow in the jogging lane. I always mean to stop by and say hi, I must have lapped her hundreds of times this year itself.

On my way to work I sometimes see a man on a bike covered with Metrocards, and there was another man I used to see with ape hanger bars, boombox attached to the back, loads of lights, and a big Puerto Rican flag.

Melt? No but I have seen the bike equivalent of a carcass decomposing, I see it quite regularly come to think of it.
