Road Cycling - why are roadies considered big beer drinkers?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Or are they....road bikers seem to have a reputation as beer drinkers. I personally enjoy an ale after a ride and I don't think its a bad thing....is this an urban legend??? what is your experience???

I never heard of that.
I've never really encountered that myself. When I was playing rugby, now that was a different story :D

Bicycling Magazine doesn't help. They were reviewing the Bianchi Axis and mentioned that the 3rd water bottle mount was useful to hold a beer on the ride home.

it's because when you spend your time hanging out with a group of guys who wear skin-tight lycra and shave their legs, you need to do something to reassure your manliness.
I got back into cycling to combat my drinking.

I love a big, fat, dark beer as much as the next guy; but my Newcastle addiction subsided when I was trying to lose weight, and I just saw beer as empty calories. Now that I'm at my goal weight, I still don't drink very much beer. The one exception has been this past weekend at teh Cubs game :)
Actually, I thought roadies were known as caffeine freaks. You know, Jittery Joes and Saeco-Cannondale and all that.

I think the fixt riders are a bit more fond of beer. It's always easier and more relaxing coming home from the pub with no brakes then getting there.

There's just nothing better after a long ride than a Dead Guy ale... or make that a Boonte Amber.... or a Bridgeport IPA. :)
Beer gets a bad rap because of that whole abusing it thing- but in moderation it can be really good for your well being, especially after a ride.

I love a beer after a road ride, and an espresso right before ...
I have noticed that there are quite a few beer and coffee jerseys, I've seen all the mexican beers on jerseys and the Female Specialized team are sponsored by Victory brewing ... plus Lance is supposedly a beer lover... then of course there is the Saeco team for the coffee connection... I don't know why its so in either case either...
although I ride to justify the beer calories in the first place..
Oh, and I've noticed that LA plugged Peet's coffee a couple of times during the Lance Chronicles. Who says Texans have no taste?

beer=carbs. carbs=energy for riding. by the transitive property of equality, beer=energy for riding.

also, alcohol imbues courgage needed for those nerve-racking attacks and breakaways.
As my other passion is rugby (used to play, now referree), it's hard for me to see that roadies are big beer drinkers. There may be a propensity to drink beer, but I wouldn't say we are "big" beer drinkers.
G'day,
You blokes never heard of, "A hard earned thirst needs a big cold beer...& the best cold beer is Vic...Victoria bitter!" ( I can hear all you Aussie expats crying now!)...so training = hard = beer = more training to burn off beer = hard = beer = more training................(I think I have a drinking problem...yep...2 hands & only 1 mouth!)
cheers,

Me too! Getting those carbs
If you are a rider from Iowa you are likely a big beer drinker. They really know how to ride and party in combination. You can find a recreational ride every weekend in that state. They are crazy. But they know how to have fun. I showed up at a ride one time in Lake Okoboji Iowa. You were to meet in a park to sign up. I got there for the pancake feed and there were 4000 riders there. They had stands set up at the resorts along the lake that were selling beer along the route, alot of the riders stopped at every bar along the way. And of course then there is ragbai, which is a 10,000 bike rolling party all the way across the state.

Lets seee.... bikes begin with B so does Beer. Cold liquids go well when your hot and tired. Its easy to justify the calories in beer when you just burned 3 thousand or more calories riding about.
It doesnt work so well the other way round, drinking beer at night that is then riding in the morning.

The courage it must take to go into a drinking establishment in cycling apparel (the road shorts) you boys are brave!

You have to be careful with beer. It doesn't always work well in a camelback. It can go flat and you have to worry about getting the hyfration system cleaned out real well or it sours.

It's a different culture here I think. Biking, beer and coffee are just some of the staples of life in the Seattle area. This bar was down by the ferry docks and many cyclists use the ferries. Many of the bar's patrons actually commented favourably on my Redhook jersey. A few asked us how far and where we went. I think people are more used to seeing lycra-clad cyclists go in and out of their shops and businesses around here and don't seem to have a problem. I'm always trouncing around my grocery store still sporting riding shorts after a ride because my wife wants me to pick up stuff on the way home.
Here's another picture for you... also near a ferry dock but this time on a different ride on the other side of the sound. You can actually see the cars lined up on the street outside waiting to get into the ferry terminal.

I was at a party a few days ago and drinking soda, coffee then beer within an hour is a big no-no. Needless to say I was at the bathroom for a good 30minutes or so.

If I'm going to drink, I stick to my stretch cruiser, lol. Closer to the ground than my Continental saddle, and only seven speeds so it keeps the speed to a minimum. Newcastle, yummmmmm.,,,,BD
every bike messneger/roadie I know go out for beers after a days work. slight bulging stomachs but fit everwhere else, look like fat roasted turkeys with chopsticks poking out, lol
Well, aside from the physical aspects of what alcohol does when it gets in your system, I'd rather go for a nice tall glass of gatorade after a long, hard ride.
Now, the Mt. Bike guys I ride with... there's another story for another day!
