Woman, 75, drives wrong way over Tappan Zee Bridge

Posted: August 09, 2009 - 6:43 PM
TARRYTOWN (AP) -- Police say a 75-year-old woman drove the wrong way on New York's Tappan Zee Bridge.

State police in Tarrytown say the woman entered the highway from the Exit 9 off-ramp Sunday morning and drove north in the southbound lanes of the bridge.

She drove about two miles before she was stopped. She told police she knew she had been driving the wrong way but kept going because she thought there would be a place to make a U-turn.

She was given tickets for improperly entering a highway, driving in the wrong direction and reckless driving.

Eight people died on July 26 when Diane Schuler drove a van carrying her three nieces and her own two children the wrong way on the Taconic State Parkway. She crashed head-on into an SUV.

Oh, they're tough those NY State Troopers.

I like the part where she said she didn't stop because 'she thought there would be a place make a U-turn.'

They should institutionalize this idiotic woman. Get her in a straightjacket now.

Either that or make her S. Palin's Transportation Advisor.

Most states' DMVs can be asked to review a motorist's fitness to continue to enjoy the privilege of driving. It is clearly time for this lady to hang up the car keys.

If she had hit and killed a cyclist, or anybody, she would have been guilty of felony reckless driving, vehicular manslaughter, and would have been liable. At her age, she may need to have her driving license re-evaluated!

One night I had a drunk get on the freeway driving the wrong way. The person got into something like 5 head-on collisions before the vehicle became disabled. Later that night, his wife was out looking for him. She was arrested for drunk driving....driving the wrong way on the road!

Stuff happens, so keep your eyes WIDE open!

You're kidding me, right? Are you that needy of being a victim you've now got to conjure up scenarios?

Uh huh. Pay attention. 90% of motorists who kill cyclists and motorcyclists don't even get a friggin traffic ticket. Happily the civil courts hold them to a higher standards, and they often pay (or their insurance company does). But the general attitude of society as reflected by law enforcement is that anybody stupid enough to ride on two wheels has it coming to them.

No doubt.

Huh?

Exactly. There is nothing to do with the article as related to cycling. But in the "whoa is me" victim mentality that permeates this forum, you found it necessary to conjour up a scenario by which the driver wouldn't have been penalized for killing.

How the heck do you people manage to get beyond the front door every morning? Seriously, I've never seen a bunch more afraid of their shdows.

Go ride a bike.
