I had about 10 days off the bike in the last couple of weeks because of bad weather, but as the forecast is good, planned to get back on the bike this week.

However, my left knee started to get v sore on Saturday and worse on Sunday, so I went to our emergency doc.

He said I had some inflammation and fluid build up and advised some gentle exercise and anti inflammatory pain killers (Ibuprofen).

It felt ok this a.m so I took some analgesics and cycled in. was v painful for about 8 or 9 miles then eased off. My feeling is that exercise will be good as increased blood flow will help take fluid away.

Anyone think otherwise. ? Could I be making it worse?

If it is inflamed, it needs rest, not a hard workout.

Some people are used to riding through "the pain barrier". This may be OK with aching muscles, which can recover the next day, but an injured or inflamed joint is another matter. Do what your doc says.

I think you'd be better off resting it for a couple of days. Ibuprofen will help ease the inflamation (I find the gel applied to the joint more effective than the tablets (don't take both)), and whilst the last thing you want to do is leave it in one position for too long, inflamation does generally want rest. I'd leave the cycling for a few days then try a short distance in an easy gear.

Oh well, I'll cycle home tonight (slowly) and as the weather looks snowy might be less guilty about having some more time off. Thanks guys.

Rest it for a couple of days. When you get back on the bike, make sure that you warm up properly by starting in an easier gear every time you ride.

Chewa, please be careful. I agree with Michael that joints are tricky. Inflammation and fluid buildup may signal problems that need medical attention.

You want to preserve those knees for cycling!
