Anyone happen to know where I can find a set of small, retro-style chrome fenders similar to these
or if anyone even still makes them?

the only thing that rear fender is protecting is half of your seat post tube...I see no real practical use for those...

The ones I remember from back in the day had a slightly longer rear fender. I should have specified that in my initial post.
My dad had a set on an old English racer he had when I was a kid and I recall them working just fine. It almost seems like the bike in those pics has the front and rear fenders switched around.

yeah I definitely think the bike in the pic has the rear fender backwards... but I would try finding some full sized ones and chopping them down to a size you like

you can probably chop and file down a honjo or velo orange one.

but you'd be better off running the full fenders.

Wald or Pyramid used to make some. I bought a couple from a bike store that had some in stock for pretty cheap $7 each. Not sure who would carry them online anymore though. I don't use mine anymore so PM me if you can't find any online.

Thanks arkiemark. I saw these Wald ones but they say they're for 26/27" wheels.

Do the ones you have fit 700c?

They will pretty much fit anything with a brake bridge in back and a drilled fork in front.

The front one will only help keep a little bit of water out your face, the rear one doesn't really do anything. I've got a couple sets in my junk pile, because they are pretty much worthless.

The only thing the front is going to do is prevent road spray from infiltrating your headset. The rear is worthless. Partial fenders are total junk. Either go all the way or don't bother.

those bobbed fenders are as useless as tits on a boar hog boy

if you must chop up some fenders or buy some ones for a kids bike

Also, if you bump them, the mounting tab will bend and your fender will be crooked.

The responses, advice and opinions are appreciated but I am looking to build a single-speed conversion based upon a multi-speed bike my dad owned when I was young (for semi-sentimental reasons). His old bike had those silly little chrome fenders, which is why I am looking for something similar.

But that is illogical.

I'll do just that, but I didn't even know about the Wald fenders until someone told me about them here in this thread.

Thanks to those of you who were helpful.

Haha. The low price of $3.38 reflects their pointlessness pretty accurately.

Haha...my Dad's bike did have gumwalls. WHITE gumwalls, to be precise. I always thought that was strange, considering this was back in the 70s. I don't recall what brand they were, but remember that all the writing on the sidewalls was in French. I don't think I'll be having much luck finding those!!!

It'll keep crud/water out of one's steer tube though right? At least?

I think they look spiffy.. Wish they were a tad longer, for aesthetic reasons..

feetpower,

Quick mount fenders like that are pretty easy to find. Models like Planet Bike Freddy's come to mind but there are others. Do a quick Google or swing by your lbs. You'll be sure to find what you want. The only issues I see at all is the ones in the picture would still allow spray to get up to your bar/hands. I personally prefer a front fender that extends a tad past the fork for this very reason. Also, the rear doesn't extend far enough towards the seat tube to keep the back of your pants from getting wet/crap on them. They would definitely be fine if you were riding in shorts or jeans and you didn't mind getting a little wet. At one point or another I posted up a pic of my Surly with heavily chopped fenders and through trial and error I've found those lengths to be just enough to keep me 100% dry. No splash on the back of my suit pants, no dirt and crap flying up threatening to ruin white shirts and my shoes don't look like I just walked out of a swamp. Although, I actually wear overshoes that extend up to the bottom of my calves on rainy days. But, on days it's just wet (rain has stopped) I just go with shoes. By the way, for shoes, regular, old plastic bags from 7-11 or wherever work great for one way. They get torn up quick but you'll arrive clean and dry.

Scrodzilla,

Apologies. I could have (should have) PM'd feetpower. I did not intentionally hijack your thread. Apologies and respect.

If anything... keeping water out of the head tube and bearings is well worth it and you may never have to replace the headset.

On bikes that won't accommodate a fender, I use a wine cork in the steer tube to serve the same purpose.

Open seat posts should get the same treatment as well.

Sixty-fiver,

Hey, that's a great reminder - an awesome "old school" trick. Another great option that only costs pocket change are the solid rubber plugs most hardware stores sell. Not as quaint of course but effective and pretty darn easy to pull out. Good stuff.

No. So you can still get the rear wheel out with rear-facing track ends.
