General Cycling Discussion - Question about my Saris 3 Bike Bones Rack

I'm taking a trip with about 3 hours of driving and need to carry 3 bikes. I have a Saris 3 Bike Bones Rack but have never taken over 1 bike using it. I wondering if the thing will actually hold up for that long a period. Most of the drive will be interstate.

Are you asking whether the rack will do what it's designed to do? I.e., hold 3 bikes on your car while you drive somewhere for 3 hours at highway speeds?

Remember to load the bikes heaviest first, lightest last, and to have the carrying arms going slightly uphill from the aluminum cylinder.

Finally, re-tighten the straps after the first half-hour to an hour. Every time I've used my Bones, I've had to tighten the straps. They're always fine after re-tightening them, but they always need that second tightening.

I used mine to carry my 17-18 pound road bike, a 40 pound el-cheapo mountain bike my father in law bought at a yard sale for $10 and a weed-eater in the third set of loops over 250 miles to the beach. No problems at all. Just make sure you lash the wheels together to keep them from banging around in the wind.

What do you do with a weed-eater at the beach?

My in-laws own the house. We cut the grass and use the weed eater to trim. Carrying the weed eater on the bike rack kept the gas smell out of the van.
