Triathlon - Huge let down

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I was all ready for my first tri (sprint) Saturday and the event was cancelled for thunderstorms:( With the weather we had they made the right call but what a disappointment. I was there at 6:30 in the morning and was really getting amped up when the call came. I'd been training all summer with Saturday's date circled in my head. Still it's been a great experience and I want to thank all of you for much of that. I've been a recreational cyclist for a long time and have been amping my riding up the last few years. Last year when I turned 50 I stumbled on the 50+ forum here. Last winter I started reading this forum and my interest was piqued to see if I could do a tri. I have mainly lurked but the advice and discussions here really helped me. I didn't get to race but I've learned a lot, gotten in great shape, and had a ball. I don't think another event will fit my schedule this year so I guess it's time to re-set my sights down the road. Again, thank you to everyone here:thumb:

Bummer! So you got another race planned?
In the race I did on Sat, just the swim was cancelled and we still biked and ran (although the run was cut short for some of the later finishers).

The weather we got was seriously wicked. 60 mph winds, 3 inches of rain, and heavy cloud to ground lightning. I'm looking to see if I can find something that works this year. I'm running a 5k this weekend. That will be a first as well. Fall is approaching fast and that means bow season for me. My first tri may have to wait until next year. On the positive side I learned a ton and feel much more comfortable about what I need to do. If I continue training through winter I should be able to do one early next year.

Since it was a full cancellation does the event organizer give you the option of transfering the money to next years race or to another event that they put on? You might want to look into that. Many times they will have that option.
Certainly keep up with your training. Start focusng on the areas that you felt you may not have been ready for. You should be really geared up and ready to go for next year. And this way maybe you can get in a couple of races and make a season out of it.
Good luck.

They are talking about a discount for next years event. They still incurred significant costs and as it was a charity event the money went there. No big deal.
That's what I was thinking. I intentionally picked an event late in the year to give myself plenty of time to prepare. I have a much better idea of what to do now.

That happened for me 3 years ago for my first sprint.....they cancelled it (via text msg) as I was walking out the door at 5:00am. BUT, I was determined to do my first Tri and found another one 1 month later and followed through. Have been doing them 3 years now and just did my first Half IM this past Sunday. Point is, don't let it get you down, and for sure find another one and knock that first Tri out.
I was at that race, too. There are several triathlons coming up in Western and Southwestern, Michigan in the next few weeks. Do you have any time at all to do those?
