Commuting - How about some rust colored components?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I was noticing how more and more bike components come in lots of black, silver, even colored shades. Wouldn't it be great if they came up with a commuter chain in rust color. Keep it clean and greased and it still looks rusty. A cassette, handlebars, pedals, cranks, even seat post ... could all be in a nice orange-brown shade to mimic genuine rust and deter thiefs (at least from a small distance).
I think I need to go ride more and stop driving my car (which is when I thought of this ... admiring some old beater bike riding on the sidewalk of all places) ... and go for a bike ride!

Not a good idea....thieves will catch on to it, and then no bike will be safe.
Generally once eny anti-theft trick is mass-marketed, it's a good sign that it will either be compromised soon or is already.
good point. I always forget that theives might have working brains and such.
A bad looking paint job plus huffy, magna, pacific, etc stickers all over the bike usually deter thieves pretty well. Then again, sometimes they'll steal the bell off your bike if you leave it unlocked.
There actually is a product with a pretty funny name called "Instant Rust" that has iron particles in the paint. I believe it's a 2 part like epoxy, containing the base layer with the iron and then an oxidizing layer.

If'n it rubs off, it's rust!
It would give you a cheap excuse to "feel up" your bike every week . . .
