Northern California - Getting from East Bay to SF?

Is there any other option than riding the BART or taking a shuttle across the bay bridge to get to SF?

Riding across the bridge would be a good way to fill two bills at once: good daily workout + commute.

Much better than paying almost $8 for BART or being stuck on some shuttle and getting zero exercise.

Can you ride across the bay bridge? If not then why? It seems silly to keep people from getting across if they can't pay.

Ferry is also an option.

Can't ride across the Bay Bridge, maybe some day. Best cheap option for now is bus or shuttle but $8 for BART round trip is a good deal IMHO.

You can't ride across the San Mateo or Richmond bridges either :(

FWIW the BART fare from 12th St Oakland to Embarcadero SF is only $3.10 so $6.20 round trip. It's probably cheaper than driving when you figure in a $4 toll plus gas. Really not that bad of a deal.

And only $2.90 from the West Oakland station for the minimum distance BART trip into the city. The Dumbarton bridge has a bikelane, but it's obviously a very long way around from most of the east bay. The Bay Bridge is supposed to get a bike lane on the new section to Yerba Buena and the western part is still under study AFAIK. There was a proposal to add a cantilevered bike lane outside the current vehicle lanes. Here's an article on the plans from earlier this year:

The only bridge you can ride over is the Dumbarton, but you have to get all the way down to Fremont and it dumps you off in Menlo Park.

From Dumbarton Bridge to either Menlo Park or Palo Alto Caltrain is about four miles.

AC Transit to the Transbay Terminal is the least expensive option and the busses have at least two spaces for bikes on the front. Some of the newer racks have three spots and the big green busses have racks plus storage bays.
