hey i need some help fixing my gears on my bike. i just got a bike from my neighbors and the gears dont work. i need some instructions one fixing my gears on my bike. the gears wont change. i dont know how much to pull the gear line or how loose to make it if some one can help me that will be great. and its a 6 gear bike. thanks

You might also want to check out www.sheldonbrown.com. A good repair manual will also help. Try "Zinn and the Art of Road Bike Maintenance" available at your local bookstore.
Once you get familiar with how the gears work (or don't in your case) you might try a more specific question here. There are many things that can foul up the gears on an old bike. Among them:
Rusty/dirty cables sticking in the housings.
Old rusty/dirty housings.
Poorly adjusted cable.
lack of lubrication of the derailer, shifter, and chain.
bent derailer hanger.
Worn out derailer.
