Yes! I did the Pittsburgh PA to Washington DC ride in July of this year. Was AWESOME! The Great Allegheny Passage is smoother than the C&O because of its former life (train line vs tow-path). Which way are you going, east or west? I'll be happy to help you get prepared...and can suggest several places to stop that are great along the way. Feel free to PM me on here. Also...you can check out some of my pics from the ride here: http://kineticycle.weebly.com/cycling.html

Feel free to PM me with specific questions...

In June a group of Bike Forums members got together and did the Montour/GAP/C&O trip. I had the priviledge of driving SAG for them. Great group of guys, great trip. You can search this site for info, but these will get you started:

The main planning thread: http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=491096
The Historian's write-up: http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=558513
twodeadpoets blog: http://www.bluesteelroads.com/
VT_Speed_TR's crazyguyonabike journal: http://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/?doc_id=5496

James Menzies at the Bike Washington site has some nice pages on the C&O and is very useful in planning a trip: http://bikewashington.org/canal/ The official Passage site can be found at: http://www.atatrail.org/index.cfm

Discussion forums include: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/coTowpath/ and http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Great_Allegheny_Passage/

Hope this info is useful.

My 14 year old son and I did the Montour Trail/Steel Valley Trail/GAP/C&O Canal Trail in July.

should also help you out.

The trail surface for the GAP and Montour Trails are a sort of crushed stone like material that is easy to ride. The C&O Canal Trail has plenty of roots. If there's rain the canal trail can be muddy. We lucked out and it was totally rideable.

Linking Up: Planning Your Traffic-Free Bicycle Trip Between Pittsburgh PA and Washington DC
By Mary Shaw and Roy Weil is a good resource as well. It's $4 and much if not all of it is available on the atatrail.org site.

We camped along the way, but you can to hotels or b&b's. Linking Up is a good resource for that. The volunteers that have worked so hard in creating the trails have done an outstanding job.

It's a great ride. Enjoy!

I rode from Cumberland to McKeesport last summer. It was a great trip. My trip report is at www.yockatomac.org/trip-reports/Cayton08trip.pdf (http://www.yockatomac.org/trip-reports/Cayton08trip.pdf)
