undefinedHow many of you actually hit a fast food place more then one a week? What is a typical breakfast, lunch and dinner for you?
While we are on the subject -- how many of you have actually seen the movie "Supersize Me", was it any good? :D

I'd say I visit a fast food place once a month. I go out to eat quite often though. A typical breakfast is a banana/protein shake mix. Then I eat granola in small handfuls for the 9 hours i'm at work plus 2 pieces of low fat meat like turkey or skinless chicken. Then dinner is whatever I feel like :D

Wow, now that I think about it, I haven't been to a fast food place in a couple months. I used to go about twice or thrice a week about a year ago.
For lunch and dinner I eat lots of canned chicken breast and lots of raw veggies - broccoli, cauliflower, tomatos, celery, carrots, and some weird things I never saw before. For breakfast I eat those Kashi GoLean cereals, and usually also an apple and some kind of berries.
But that's except for the weekend, which I liberally define as early Friday afternoon to Sunday night. During that time I'll eat goodies, like cake and candy and stuff. Oh yeah, and BEER!

I don't eat fast food unless I absolutely have to, like I will when I am driving cross country in a week helping my parents move. I went and saw super size me. It was really good. Pretty interesting all the facts that came up in it. Pretty educational. Also it was pretty funny. I highly recommend it.
I quit eating fast food and watch what I eat when I go out to dinner. I have a problem with salt so I am now careful. Breakfast is normally shreadded wheat w/skim milk and 16 oz cappichino :D

I'll admit to this.
On my early morning rides, I occasionally go to McD's for breakfast.
What I get is a $1.00 Egg McMuffin - without any sausage (Just a muffin, egg and cheese) and a small OJ. Costs me about $2.39.
Otherwise
Wendy's - I get their Oriental Chicken Salad. I use only 1/2 of the dressing provided, and about 1/2 of the noodles.
I also occasionally get a McD's ice cream, which used to be (and may still be) made from low fat products.
Also, at Wendy's I will get a grilled chicken sandwich (no breading), throw away the bun, and combine it with a plain baked potato (on which I put their low cal Ranch Dressing). Not a bad meal.
I NEVER get the "double hamburger combined with French Fries" and high calorie drink.
In fact, my drink is always water. My wife gets their 2% milk at times.

Agreed on the no fries or soft drink...that's the worst part of the fast food.
If you just eat the burger or chicken sandwich once in awhile, where is all the "evilness"?

the bun: high fructose corn syrup, partially-hydrogynated oils, preservatives, sugar
the meat: processed meat by-products, sugar, binders, fried in hydogynated oils, etc.
eating anything occaisionally isn't going to kill you but once you know what's in all that crap how can you stand eating it?

You mean cow mucus and puss? Did you know those are the main ingredients in milk? I love milk (non-fat) but I have a hard time with it now that I know what it is... oh well.

McDonald's hit with fat lawsuit
Public interest group says fast-food chain broke promise to reduce fat used to cook french fries.
July 9, 2004: 8:32 AM EDT
NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - A public interest group is suing McDonald's, charging the fast food chain with false advertising due to its promise in 2002 that it would cut the "bad" fat used in its cooking process.
Lawsuits
Justice and Rights
McDonald's Corporation
The group BanTransFats.com, Inc., a California not-for-profit group, filed a federal lawsuit in San Francisco Thursday, charging the company's delay in its promised reduction of trans fatty acids in its cooking process constitutes false advertising.
The group said it is not seeking any monetary damages.
"BTF is asking the court to order that McDonald's take effective steps to inform its customers about its failure to make the change," said a statement from the group. "BTF is also asking that McDonald's make the change to the new cooking oil as soon as possible, just as it promised and represented to the public."
McDonald's announced in September 2002 that it would use an "improved cooking oil" to significantly cut trans fats in the deep fried products on its menu, such as french fries. It said at that time it would cut trans fatting acid levels in its french fries by 48 percent, reduce saturated fat by 16 percent and dramatically increase polyunsaturated fat by 167 percent.
It said it expected to complete the changes by February 2003. But on Feb. 28, 2003, it issued a statement saying it was extending the time it would take to make the change, and it did not give any new deadline or target date.
"While speedy implementation is an admirable goal, we are most focused on the satisfaction of our customers and the quality of our products," said a statement from Ralph Alvarez, McDonald's U.S. Chief Operating Officer at that time.
McDonald's (MCD: Research, Estimates) could not immediately be reached about the lawsuit Friday.
The group said the suit does not have anything to do with obesity. It said trans fats cause serious medical health problems other than obesity. It cited a Harvard School of Public Health which estimated 30,000 or more premature heart disease deaths are caused each year by trans fats.
The same group filed a suit against Kraft Foods (KFT: Research, Estimates) in April, seeking a court injunction that it stop marketing and selling Oreo Cookies to children in the state of California, until such cookies contain no partially hydrogenated oil or other trans fat.
Kraft announced soon after the suit was filed that it would move to reduce or eliminate the trans fat in the Oreo, and the group subsequently dropped its lawsuit.

Call me crazy, but if I'm going to splurge (diet, not wallet) and eat a McDonald's meal, I'd want the full fat and flavor I'm accustomed to having.
Pretty soon, there will be nothing left any good to eat.

Well if I eat a burger, I eat a 100% beef burger not a 100% beef by-product burger. If I eat a steak, I buy a real cut of meat that cannot be found in a big chain grocery. That does not even look like meat! Look at what real meat looks like- real cuts of healthy meat. Big chain groceries don't have that, they have pinkish, sickly, abnormally large cuts of contaminated meat.
Burgers? Do you think McD's actually pays for 100% real beef? No way, it's beef by-products in there.
I don't eat breat with partially hydrogynated oils and I drink a Coke often while riding or just after.

Arent antibiotics a form of healthcare?
And racerX, do your eyes hurt after a while of looking down on all of us? /grin
Seems that someone with some knowledge of industry practices, addatives etc could use this forum to help educate people. That would surely be more welcome then having someone attempt to belittle our diet choices.

healthcare would be to treat open sores, blood diseases and infections. antibiotics are used as a stop gap until the cow can be slaughtered for food.
As I said, I drink milk but I have a harder time now that I know what it really is.
Belittle your diet choices? You are a fat pig that eats fast food daily? Than yes, I belittle your choices. If not than I'm not belittling you.

beef by-products:
mechanically sperated, all the waste matter after the "good stuff" has been gutted, cartilidge, spinal cord, brain matter, hoves, etc. mixed with actual meat, fillers, sugars, fats pressed into circular patties= processed meat=cheap hamburger.
beef:
a cut of meat ground into hamburger = hamburger (which tastes even better than processed meat)

Breakfast - oatmeal, one bagel, lunch huge pile of homegrown broccoli, squash and beans, snack-grapes and nuts, dinner - spagetti (home made sauce from home grown tomatos), chicken or fish more veggies. Weekends -- we ride our bikes somewhere and have lunch and usually skip dinner or just snack a little. We haven't been to a burger place in about 6 months, and it wasn't even very good. No sodas for me but my husband likes his diet pepsi. I just stick with water or tea most of the time.
I generally don't go to fast food places. The only one I like is subway, because their sandwiches are non greasy, everything is fresh, and you get to choose what you want. They also have great soups!
As for supersize, macdonalds and other fast food restaurants in canada don't have the SUpersize.

I saw the movie the other week. Having not been in North America for years now, I had no idea the sizes of the portions were that large. I couldn't believe it - it was amazing seeing the size of the stuff he ate, absolutely amazing.
Informative, funny, and interesting. It was especially amusing that her girlfriend was a vegetarian (or maybe vegan).
For me? I guess I'd say I eat junk food about once a month on average, usually kebabs.
(ok, I'll be honest, I've been eating like a pig for the last week, but hell I'm on holiday and I leave France in two weeks so I'm splurging while I still can - but *normally* I average once a month).

She was a vegan chef, and actually put him on a month long vegan diet to clense his system after the hell he put it through.
I would agree that this is a very good movie. Entertaining and eye-opening. If you haven't seen it yet, I definately recommend picking up the DVD if for no other reason then the "Smoking Fry" bonus feature.

The movie was shocking, informative, and sometimes pretty darn funny. The thing is to not pick him apart to discredit, but to take it as his side of a debate. If you cant handle debates with others, then theis genre of film isnt for you.
weekdays:
Breakfast : Jack in the box ultimate breakfast combo, with orange juice (i go to work at 5am, its the only place open)
lunch: cafeteria at work, food quality is about on par with any any buffet style restaurant...not too shabby, but a bit poor on the pricing.
dinner: usually meat. Steak, fish, pork, with a nice beer. Sides are very rarely seen...I just want to sate the craving for quality meat.
weekends:
saturday: pizza. i order one and eat it over the entire day.
sunday: Finish off a pack of ramen in the morning, eat a hardcore super-great makes me squeal with joy yummy lunch at mom's, then have another supercalifragilisticespialidocious dinner there.
My diet is pretty meat-centric...lots of proteins, moderate amounts of fat, my carb intake is high due to the beer and soft drinks I consume, but cholesterol isnt too bad....I could use more veggies and fruits though.
Vegetarian here.
Raised in an Italian household. Pasta every day. Carbohydrate-based diet when growing up. A little more variety now, but basically mediteranian.
Loved the movie. I wish more people would see it.
Breakfast these days: coffee + bannana + miscelleaneous fruit.
Fast food lunch consists of supermarket sushi, or quizno's veggie sub, or salad. If not those things then left-over dinner from day before.

I haven't eaten at a fast food restaurant in over 3 years. Not once. Even when I was fat, I didn't eat fast food. The stuff just grosses me out. I do the fast casual thing, though. If any of you have a Qdoba in your town, you know why I love that stuff. You can make it really healthy, though.

I agree with you about partially-hydrogenated oils - I am just discovering how bad they are. I am eliminating everything I can that contains them. Many people probably aren't aware of the dangers. Thanks for the link to BanTransFat FXjohn.

dude.....huge tip....if the wendys doesnt look like one of the top performers...dont eat their chili. I used to work at one during college, and after that I refuse to eat chili at any one that doesnt look like it pulls in a huge profit.
The best of the worst is day old grill meat goes into it. worst of the worst is the things that the places that are barely in buisiness will do with the chili is pretty much a massive health code violation. stuff like "oh sh** it fell into thet sink...lets ladle it back into the tub". Oh, and the same tank of chili can be weeks old...they just mix it with teh new...I dunno how good that can be, but I have my doubts.
I'll agree it's some fine tasting chili, just dont get it from any of the wendy's that arent very profitable.
I'll eat their chicken, that's about it. I'll eat their burgers only if I know if a good grill operator is on at the moment. They dont time their grills, so the op has to know what hes doing or youll get undercooked meat. To make it worse they run on a tight timeframe during lunch and dinner, so there are at least 5-6 undercooked patties on average during each rush. I should know this, since I ran the register and had to deal with complaints over this :(
...oh and dont be too mean to the cashiers at the ghetto wendys....we had to deal with robberies too often. Eventually you get sick of being robbed and just get mouthy in hopes they just shoot you. It was pretty much a robbery every other month...it gets old fast.

I work hard at maintaining my fast food diet... Breakfast is a glass of OJ and a bowl of Honey-nut cheerios with a banana.
We have a limited supply of restaurants in the town that I work. Typically Monday is a version of Chinese all you can eat buffet, Tuesday and Thursday it’s Burger Thing for their double whopper with onion rings, Wednesday is a chicken and cheese quesadilla at Taco Johns and Friday is all you can eat pizza buffet. Lunch is washed down with a diet coke and a refill.
During the course of the day I stay hydrated with a cup of coffee in the morning and a six pack of diet Mountain Dew through the course of the day.
My health conscious wife ensures that I cook a very sensible evening meal that consists of skinless chicken, vegetables, and rice/pasta/tortilla/potato in some sort of concoction.
My wife also insists that I get an annual physical… the doctor thanks me for coming because he is getting paid… but other than that the trip is worthless. Lower than average BP, resting heart-rate 52, off the chart low cholesterol, etc. Did I mention 6'2" and 183#.

It's been a few months since I had fast food. I'm afraid that if I once go back and have some, I'll fall off the wagon and go on a binge and my waist will expand like a hot air balloon!
McDonalds uses 100% beef. So do most of their competitors.
Most fast food Chinese is as bad as burgers and french fries (note the "most").
French fries are a gift from god and should be consumed at least twice a month, but it doesn't matter if make them at home, bake them, or get them from McDonalds. :D
That lawsuit really, really makes me angry. It's a frikin business. They can educate the public, but they don't have the right to try and force anyone to serve what they consider to be healthier food. It's not like it's a school cafeteria or something.
Rants done.
Fast food - maybe once every two weeks. Mexican preferably. It's easy to go low fat with mexican food around here if you keep a limit on the cheese.

I have a fairly particular regimen for fast food - I don't go to McDonald's or Burger King ever, on a rare occasion I will go to Wendy's but get only the grilled chicken sandwich. I do, however, go to Quizno's and Subway a few times a week (sometimes several times a week) and get the lower-fat sandwich offerings.
My breakfast is usually a frappucino and a bagel, my lunch is often a sandwich with baked chips or popcorn, and dinner is often mexican food or a slice of pizza. Pizza is the worst culprit at this point; it's so easy to get a nice slice anywhere in NYC or NJ.
I admittedly don't eat enough greens, and am trying to do one salad a day. I am not overweight but I have a feeling if I modify my diet, my cycling would reap more direct benefits.

oh, and there's a place in New York City called BetterBurger - I eat there every time I am in Chelsea, because they have low-fat turkey burgers with whole wheat buns and air-baked french fries. Top that with a diet pepsi and you have the same experience as fast food, but it tastes a LOT healthier and is about 50% less fat or more. Also, their cajun ketchup is great.
I hope this chain expands so everyone can have a betterburger.

vegetarian here. i buy a veggie burger from a mom & pop fastfood restaurant here about once a month.
i have seen the movie, and recommend it. nothing much surprised me about the facts, but it is definately presented well, and humourously.
i want to comment on the earlier mention of milk and breast feeding. breast milk from humans is much different than milk from cows. human breast milk is for human babies and cow's milk is for baby cows. it's purpose is to turn a 50lb calf into a 1 tonne bull in months. many believe that's why kids are bigger these days and girls are having their periods earlier and earlier (well before 10). we don't bring dairy into the house, but i'll occasionally have a dish with cheese in it when i'm out.

I eat fast food and like it. Not every day but probably 2-3 times a week. #3 breakfast at MickyD's rocks (sausage/egg mcmuffin, hash brown, coffee). I haven't seen Supersize Me and I probably won't. From what I've read, the premise is faulty. If you eat large portions of (name something healthy-wheat germ) for 1 mo. straight and don't exercise, you'll get sick.
I'd love to do a counter-point for McD's. If they pay me for a month to eat at McD's every day, I'll take off work, ride my bike, lift weights, etc., I could end up with lower weight then when I started.
Genetics, exercise, diet. If you're good with 2, you can slide a little on the third. Moderation in everything (including moderation) is a key to well-being.

Hmmm.
Breakfast is usually a wholewheat bagel with PB&J. Black cup of coffee.
Lunch is usually whatever we had for diner the night before or, a sandwich made from chicken, ham or turkey, some chedder cheese, and a piece or fruit or a pudding cup.
Diner. Well it all depends on the kinda day we've had.
We go out maybe once or twice a month for diner. And will occasionally order in a pizza or chinese food.
I don't eat nearly as much McD's as I used to. Maybe once in a blue moon now.
Oh, and about 3 liters of water is sprinkled in there somewhere.

You might be surprised how much stuff is still done and passes organic certification. :)
I generally hit fast food about once or twice a month. If I do, it is never MC'D's or anything like that. Wendy's taco salad is about the strongest thing I've had.
I try to eat as healthy as possible, but weekends I go off a bit
Typical:
Breakfast
Cup of coffee, various energy / health bar - Peice of fruit, and a multivitamin
Lunch
Diet Caffeine Free Pepsi
Usually a sandwich (baked chicken breast, baby spinach, organic tomatoes on organic whole wheat)
Usually a cup or so of lowfat cottage cheese
At the Gym
Energy Bar (maybe)
Tons of water, usually about 3-4 20oz. bottles
Dinner
Varies - Usually a cup of Soy milk with some random tuna / fish / lean mean dish with a side of veggies.
Weekends I splurge - I'll maybe have a beer or three, pizza occationally, or something along those lines.

Why is pizza considered a junk food?
Why is pizza considered a junk food?
Probably some folks consider it to be junk food because of the gratiutously high calorie content it has when it is topped with cheese, American style.
Nutritionally, its great, if you cut back on the cheese and other heavy toppings.
