Besides being heavy, would using a motorcycle or small car battery in place of a SLA battery work on say an ezip bike? It would be cheaper....

It would work, but not for very long.

You should avoid using a 12 volt battery with a 24-volt controller because you may damage your controller. It's possible you could damage your motor too.

If you use two batteries in series that solves the voltage problem, but there's another problem.

Batteries that are designed to be used with a starter motor are essentially supposed to be kept fully charged almost 100% of the time, and they are never intended to be used to supply power continuously for an hour or three. In normal use with a "deep cycle" lead acid battery you might get 100-300 charge-and-use cycles (depending on how you use it). With a "starter motor" type lead acid battery, you're likely to get less than half as many uses.

Thanks cerewa! These batteries are cheap so I had to ask.
If I had experimented with them, I would have put them in series of course to get the 24 volts
and also use the deep cycle ones.

I'm surprise I haven't found anyone on this list that tried it. Must be a terrible idea :(.

If you have an older ebike battery pack, you might be able to save money by pulling it apart and replacing the SLA batteries.

For example, my schwinn ebike costs $130 per battery pack, but it only takes 2 SLA batteries at 30-40 bucks each to rebuild it.

and also use the deep cycle ones.

Some folks have used "marine" batteries as well - they're designed to be used for the high-current jolt of a starter motor or for the relatively "deep discharge" use of an e-bike, so they're less than ideal for either purpose but they're usable.

Don't look any battery as you have SLA.Its good for car.
