Folding Bikes - My new (modern) Moulton has arrived!!!

I have been dropping a few hints that I had a new bike on its way to me... now it is arrived I can reveal what it is:

It is a Custom Bridgestone Moulton.:D

These bikes are a modern version of the 1960’s Moulton F- frames.

Bridgestone has a long established association with Moulton Bicycles and they asked Alex Moulton if he could design a bike for them so he designed an updated version of the 1960’s F- frame bikes.
These bikes are made in Japan where they are available as complete bikes or as frame kits which bike shops can build up to the (Japanese) customers specification.

The regular Bridgestone Moultons where imported into the UK from Japan until recently when the Yen doubled against the Pound making the bikes too expensive. This custom version cost around £1850 originaly, but this price has also gone up as well.

This is a special version known as the Custom Sport. The bike was imported as a frame kit from Japan and then built up at the Bradford upon Avon, Moulton Factory (for Avon Valley Cyclery) using high quality components, up rated suspension and a custom paintjob. In this case a very dark metallic reddish purple.
I had the bike delivered to work so I need to wait until I get it home (tighten the handlebars & fit some peddles) before I can take it out for a ride. It will be interesting to see how it compares with our 1960’s Moultons.

I managed to secure a very good deal on this bike, especially since the rising Yen means that none will be imported for the foreseeable future. :thumb:

is moulton a folding bike cuz from those pix it doesn't look like it could fold? if it is, can you show us a pix of how it looks when it is folded?

i was waiting for PDR... moultons are not foldable, some models do break appart in the middle, for storage.

this is the only nonfolding bicycle thats discussed exclusively in the folding forum, because as you can see Moultons are the mother of small wheel folding bicycles.:thumb: there are new ones with "space frame"...but this one is really special, its the original revisited by Alex Moulton with newer components...:love:

Sorry for the delay, I had to go and pick the bike up from work, and the tyres I bought online for my sports car... our Porters are great and asked when I’m having the speedboat delivered :rolleyes:

Got home checked the bike over, fitted some MKS quick release pedals and then went for a ride.... wow, this is a very nice bike... took me a while to get used to the combined gear/brake levers. I still need to tweak the bar and saddle position a little. I’m hoping to get out this weekend on the bike.:D

46t & 56t chainwheels (seems OK but I may upgrade to a 62t)
105 flight deck combined brake/gear levers
GP CarbonPro dropbars
GP RacePro stem
Shimano side pull brakes (with clever little adjusters)
Bridgestone custom saddle

A lot of people assume that Moultons are folding bikes, Moulton have never made any folders. Most Moultons will separate for travel.

The purpose of the beam or whatever it is called is to support the rear rack. Some of the F-frame bikes came with a detachable beam so a person could ride to an event take off the bags, rack and beam and then compete in track events. Some owners chopped off the rear beams (to make them look more sporty/ or replicas of the SpeedSix). The yellow bike I am expecting has had this treatment.

thats pretty nice, i would think taking bags off for commuting purpose, but your explanation has much more logic! thanx!

Beautiful! I would love to own one.

Moulton really knows how to design an elegant bike that is still practical and usable. They are in a class by themselves.

Went for a quick ride yesterday to set up the saddle and handle bar position and then did about 18 miles today. The bike rides and handles really nicely and the STI levers work great. Very pleased with the new bike :thumb:
