do quick stiks work for road tires? I have only heard of people using them on MTB tires.

If you mean patches like scabs yes they work. But once you get home a new tube is in order. I have used them but with 120 PSI tires they seem to only hold for a day or so.
From word of mouth, the Quik Stik tire lever's head is too 'fat' to fit into a majority of road sized rim/tire combinations.

VAR makes an excellent tire-jack that's lightweight and easy to carry. It works on the Archimedes principle of leverage and gets a tight clincher on/off a rim quickly and painlessly. Highly popular in Europe - rare in the USA. This person is utterly trustworthy.
If you order one - write down/copy his instructions for use on his site:
I've gotten to like the Crank Brothers variation on the Speed Stick. It seems to work well for road tires, at least it does for mine.
