I recently added an aero bar to my bike to get more comfortable positions.
It's a profile design jammer GT and I absolutely love it.

Daaymn! That's a great bike!! I really like all of the different handle bars you have! And all of the storage space! Those shimano 105s are on point! My Fuji had those equipped and I have to say that was the smoothest ride Ive ever experienced in my few years of life :D Not too big of a fan of the huge frame, but Im assuming its made from some kind of special metal, or else you arent worried about weight?

Since you talk about 105 i'm assuming you are referring to me.
The handlebars i have now are just fantastic for my needs:
flatbars for control on the rough tracks and the mountains...
bullhorns for steep climbing at speed...
and recently ... short aero bars for the flat or descending roads or even slight hills.
I can definately advise this combination to everyone :)
Storage space? I'm assuming you are being ironic or you are commenting on timber08's picture below mine (great cockpit you got there btw timber).
I do have a detachable bikerack for family trips, but in general I use my bike for sports.
To speak of the 105 crank ... it is indeed very smooth ... combined with an SLX cassette, a XT rear derailleur, a R443 front derailleur and a LX chain... it shifts incredibly well (at least compared to what i was used to which was a crappy citybike)
I have SRAM attack gripshifts to operate my gears and with the aforementioned drivetrain I can simply gear down 4 or 5 gears in one pull and it just does it's job without hickups :)
About the frame: It is very light for it's strenght.
It does look large, especially on the side-view, because the tubing is oval-shaped.
I was on a quest for the perfect frame for months until i found this-one which is made in belgium a few miles from where I live ... it's a 7005 aluminium triple butted ultralight frame.
I don't recal the exact weight but it was about 1500 grams.
The whole bike, including aerobars, weighs a bit more than 12 kilos.

Wow that looks dangerous! I don't so much get the geometry of the bike and maybe that is what is throwing me off. But it looks like the frame is super short and that is why you need such a ridiculously long seat post. That thing has got to be at it's limits or past.

This bike is an experiment. True enough this frame is short by choice. I wanted a bike I could manipulate, bunny hop, jump and race. I

had in mind to ride dirt paths, taking a shot at cyclocross without sinking into an expensive bike and then not liking the sport later. As far

as the seat post: It's not at it's limit. I bought the longest seat post I could find to make up on the short frame. I still have 1 1/2 to

2 inches or so from max limit line. The post in width is tight in there and strudy by length no worries.

I admit it looks freaky geometrically but fits so nice, like a glove. Today I bought continental tires and ordered bar end shifters. Should be

in by Wednesday or Thursday next week.

I have commuted on pavement and I get good leg extension. On the dirt I have lowered it
an inch and half to just drill it and save my jews on the ups and downs. :) It's been tough bike I've bit it a couple of times. The bike not a scratch, me not so much. I've paid.

Here's mine - just got it a few weeks ago. 2009 Specialized Sirrus with some minor changes. I had the LBS add a rigid seat post and invert the stem when I got it, and I've added Giant platform pedals and Trippy Grips. I'd level the saddle, straighten up the handlebars and cut down the steerer tube. You can pivot the stem upwards to compensate for the shortened steerer. I have no problem with the seatpost, but there's too much stem sticking out in my opinion.

When you get your saddle level, you may find you need to lower the seatpost a bit.

updated shot of my gary fisher 2009 kaitai. only change left is maybe changing the white cables to black, but that is a $70 vanity project i may or may not do. some people love the white cables as a nice contrast, i also like bikes that are all dark colors, black/titanium/chrome so we shall see.

changes from stock are schwalbe marathon cross tires, serfas seat, profile bar ends, bontrager black pedals with mks steel toe clips and christophe straps, new handlebar grips.

I think the bike looks sharp to be honest, I surprised nobody suggested the OP to chop his legs a little shorter so he could use a shorter seat post. Hybrid bikes are outside the box & this is a perfect example. It's a nice clean bike, nice job

Some things are just wrong. Extra long seatposts are not one of them. Saddles angled like sliding boards are. This puts too much weight on the hands, just to keep oneself from sliding off the saddle. It will be difficult to put weight on the sit bones and it will be difficult to keep the sit bones on the wide part of the saddle. The rider of this bike will slide onto the nose of the saddle, putting extra pressure on the parts that this saddle tilt is usually an attempt to prevent putting extra pressure on.

Timber_8,
I was curious do your aerobars happen to be the model Airstryke by Profile Design? Also who makes that Butterfly bar? I saw your cockpit arrangement and knew I must replicate it, this setup would solve so many problems and add a serious amount of comfort to my 7.3fx. Thanks in advance.

Have been spending a lot of time with a pretty French girl of late and the Trekker hasn't been getting nearly enough love but got up this am and upgraded the crank which goes nicely with the new 11-30 cassette.

Lost a little top end but gained a ton of bottom end which will be good when I toss on the cross tyres and hit the trails... and stiffer and lighter is always a good thing... the improvement at the crank was immediately noticeable.

I appreciated the comment. It was my first conversion and I learn alot this past year about bike mechanics. I did make this to be different and my own type bike.

My 10yrs old has come from the rockies to live with me. I bought him a new mountain bike from Wally world just to introduce him to biking and for the purpose to use on the bike path to his summer day camp. He found it strange but cool to use a bike helmet instead of skate helmet.

We rode Saturday to show him the route. I made all the adjustment on his bike to his height and riding style. Thanks to what I learned. As we were doing down hill he yelled," Dad let's ride on the grass!" I lead off the path cut through the grass fast and he followed. It was awesome! Awesome because it was fun and it was the first time we rode bike together. My fiancee' had to stay on the cement and meet us around. She was a road bike. It was a nice ride.

Oh this is what my bike look like before.

Nice job on the Trek 700 multi, however one wonders if that bike is the correct size with all that seatpost and stem showing?
Here is a 700 that I fixed up for my friend (in photo), the cheapo brifter broke and I have since rerouted gear cables, added barcons and blue tape. Get out and ride brother.

Really nice looking job droobie. Here is a older pic of my 750 just after I finished the build on a rainy day. I am currently converting it back to it's hybrid roots with a Bontrager Trekking bar and XTR shifters. I rebuilt my Specialized Crossroads for my daughter and want something more upright to do shopping runs and tooling around town. It is a great ride with the drops though.

Last summer I kept thinking new bike, but as I reads more, those old steel framed Treks may be more than worth it to hold onto. I HAVE to ditch those twist shifters, I hate them with a passion, so I'm thinking new drivetrain (chainrings [which need replacing due to wear], cassette, front and rear derailleurs, chain, shifters might make for a BIG upgrade).

Defiantly worth rebuilding. Personally IMO the 90-93 Trek 750s were the best hybrids ever made. A bit on the heavy side, but what steel lugged bike isn't. A beauty that is versatile and the ride is as smooth as butter! If you are looking for a good crankset, I believe Jenson still has the Shimano LX FC-M582 on sale for $85. Comes with BB.

New member here. I just purchased a TREK 7300 last weekend and I am having a blast!

I started biking again about two weeks ago after many years away. I need to shed about 65-70 lbs and just hate boring workouts, etc. I though cycling would be the way to go so I pumped up the tires of my 22 year old GT Karakoram MTB and quickly realized that I was not as young as I used to be! Needed something that would provide some comfortable rides and after some research here and advice from the guys at the LBS I decided to go the hybrid route. I didn't want to spend a ton of money and thought that the 7300 represented the best value for my budget. Of course I had to add a few "upgrades" :D

http://www.pcsincnet.com/MyTrek7300SideShot1.jpg

Shimano PD-M324 Pedal Updgrade (also purchased a pair of Bontrager RL shoes. I used to use clips and straps. I am still getting used to these but I like them a lot. If I go on a casual ride with the family I can just use the platform side and normal shoes.

Hello I just joined. This is my stock Gary Fisher Kaitai which I am enjoying. I only ride for fun right now, but may commute depending where I end up. I am putting some slick (Gator Hardshell) tires on it to replace the hybrid stock tires that came with it. I hope to do more in the future but I'm still learning.

My Marin PointReyes '09. I use it for commuting when the weather is good (not so often lately here in Seattle) and I really like the bike. However I've already made a few modifications:
- brakes upgraded to BB7
- pedals to shimano A530
- tires to continental TravelContact

I'm still thinking about updating the crankset, as it seems to flex when using the bigger chain ring (and also cuz I like doing some mechanic stuff) :D
I just weighted it today for the first time, and seems to be around 30 lb.

Added a second bottlecage for long trips drinking pleasure

http://i46.tinypic.com/2lkw9wz.jpg (http://i46.tinypic.com/16ga6uc.jpg)

Changed the stem from a creaky unstable adjustable stem to a nice and rigid Ritchey 30° stem
This also lowered the handlebar a bit, making the bike a bit more sportive, but still upright enough for me and my bad back.

So, it all started off with getting my son a bike to commute to the nearby (2 miles one way) university (CSUN). Rather than paying over $100 for a parking permit and dealing with overcrowded parking lots, I was glad he chose to bike it instead. He's rather new to biking (Nintendo generation) and his first thought was a cruiser. I told him he should get something with some gears. This is what he found within the $ range he was looking for... A nice simple bike, not too flashy to get swiped (yes, he's getting a u-lock), good upright riding-position for him to get more acquainted with riding, and an overall very comfortable bike.
http://i416.photobucket.com/albums/pp250/xBLKnGLDx/Bikes/DSCF0688.jpg
A 2009 Raleigh Venture.... It really is a joy to ride this... it's no speed-demon of course, just a really comfy ride.

As I mentioned... that's how it all got started. After riding it myself, it got me reminiscing on my old GT Timberline mountain bike I had in the early 90's and how much I enjoyed riding. So seeking the wife's approval, I asked her what she thought about getting ourselves some bikes. Her knowing I could use the exercise, gave an unenthusiastic okay. That is until we started going shopping. I liked the Transeo from GT, but had a hard time finding the 1.0 Disc model - she fell in love with this, a GT Transeo 2.0 (Medium), and was able to get it on the spot.
http://i416.photobucket.com/albums/pp250/xBLKnGLDx/Bikes/DSCF0687.jpg

I wanted the same thing, however, I wanted the GT Transeo 1.0 Disc (Medium), so I ordered it... but supposedly I was told GT was out of stock (which seemed weird). But they asked if I wanted an GT Transeo Ultra instead... I said hell yeah, but had no confidence that it would come through. Lo and behold, I arrive at the store and they have this in the box (not yet put together):
http://i416.photobucket.com/albums/pp250/xBLKnGLDx/Bikes/P1030058.jpg
I think it's a 2009 model, and it has a carbon fork unlike the US spec of a "SR NCX-E RL" suspension fork. But I noticed GT's Euro spec had the carbon fork and actually I prefer it since the bike is fairly light as is at 26lbs and provides a nice combo with the alum frame. In case any one is wondering, I've added the Ergons GX2's, and trying out the Selle Royal Lookin saddle (the stock WTB Pure-V saddle was hurting).

Anyway, so glad we did this... we all are riding short stints daily after work and looking forward to planning some longer rides in the future... and since my company will soon be relocating 6mi away from our house, I definitely foresee commuting my new little toy in the near future.

Do the wheels weigh less than the originals? Is that why you got the increase? Also, how does your handle bar set up compare to a set of drop bars? I'm thinking of getting drop bars, due to carpal tunnel, but I thought I'd ask for an opinion on a different set up.

First off, the wheels themselves are lighter than my original wheels and secondly they have 23mm racetyres on them with 8 bars of pressure which decreases rolling resistance.
I now have a race wheelset and a crosscountry wheelset and can easily swap them in a couple of minutes, according to my needs. :)
The cassette on the racewheelset also is 11-23 which is perfect for road riding with long climbs.

As for the drop handlebar: I live in "De Vlaamse Ardennen", which is a typical roadcycling-mekka so there are a lot of roadbikes around ... yet I hardly ever see anyone who actually uses the bottom grips on them, mainly because using the bottom grips on roadbars is very hard on your back, arms and wrists. If you have carpal tunnel, like you say, I doubt you will enjoy dropbars at all.
Another thing with dropbars is that riding ofroad with them and doing some mountainbiking is very difficult, since they aren't very wide and thus have less control.
The set-up I have now didn't come by chance ... I thought about it for a long time and to say I am pleased with it would be an absolute understatement.
I have a flatbar for rough roads and off-road.
I have long barends for climbing hills at speed, standing up.
I have an aerobar for doing long straight bits of road.
Especially you, having a wrist problem .... I think you should definately at least try out some nice ergonomic aerobars but not the straight ones since they will strain your wrists aswell.

Thanks for the info on the bars. My department store bike has drop bars on it, and they seem to be ok, no perfect, but ok. My new ride has flat bars, and they simply don't work with my carpal tunnel problem. I think I found a bar that will work. When I get it purchased and installed, I'll have to get a pic put up here.
